Does Gas cap vary by year?
So my gas cap on my 79 never fit right. It made my gas cap door sit up @ 1 cm or so. I swapped the gas cap from another 928 and now the gas cap door sits nice and flush. Problem is the replacement gas cap is cracked a little and the key is missing.
Was there different size gas caps over the years? What's the part #'s for the early style? As far as I can see there's only one model # for all years.

I dont know about different sizes( heighth wise) but there are different caps for the different keys, the alarm key VS the non alarm key has a longer or shorter barrel on the cap.
The red portion can be removed by first soaking it in hot water then lifting the tabs back to pop the cover off then the cylinder can be rekeyed

The general opinion is that there is only one style, but I know for sure that the stainless cap I have from a 78 does not want to fit on my 79 so I suspect it is more complicated.

I was going to try to rekey the gas cap but the gas cap I have that fits well is cracked on the red part. I need a new gas cap, but want to get another one that fits. My previous gas cap was perfect but didn't fit (too tall) and the cracked one I have now fit's pefect but is cracked.
I'm not sure why the cracked one fits and the good one doesn't. There must be different size caps out there.

BTW, I don't have the first cap anymore (The one that doesn't fit but was in perfect condition). I swapped gas caps with the '80 928 i bought and recently sold. Now I only have the cracked one (from the 80) that does fit. (So I can't swap out the red part).
If i cant figure out why the cracked one fits, i guess I can try to glue the cracked cap. Any suggestions on what glue to use?

There must be a different gas cap for early cars. i cant see a part # anywhere on the cap. Now I wish I had my old cap to compare heights. I sold the '80 928 and forgot about the swap.
BTW, Both caps fit the '80 fine. Door sat flush. Just doesn't make sense.

I have had early and middle caps apart to fix broken locking pawls, and have seen a difference in that area - early pawl was simpler (IIRC square ended vs toothed), and very slightly different dimensions. Never noticed if the external size changed though. Once you get the red cover off (needs 3 knife blades and 4 hands), the tumbler can be rekeyed failry easily - see a piece on the UK 928 site on the process.

There are only two gas caps available from Porsche currently.
928 201 901 03 ($307) with stipulated VIN number
928 201 903 02 ($140) without stipulated key - so you just get a cap with the key and it does not match your existing key.
I do have a couple of the early SS caps so I know they did exist.
