Default What size and where to buy? Generic intake tubing for GTS

Hi folks,

The intake tubes on the GTS I just bought are pretty well rotted. The OE ones at $200 a piece seem hard to justify. I saw a post where Alan had rebuilt his with the stock ends and some generic black hose. Any recommendations on source or what type/size to get? Does NAPA carry suitable hose for this?

Thanks,
Paul

I ended up ordering a pair of the S4 plastic intake tubes for my GTS. Relatively cheap when I bought them in 2009 ($34 each) and they look factory!

I would go to mcmaster.com. They have lots of options in this size range. Search for duct hose.

We sell an after market set using Mercedes tubes for $75 the pair or as said already factory earlier tubes for $45 each.

What's different about the Mercedes ones? Are they insulated, or also just blow-molded plastic?

You also mentioned at one time that Dave Lomas had some aftermarket ones. Do you know if he still makes them? I haven't been able to find any more detail on those. I'm thinking he might not, since he fairly recently worked on this car and it still had rotted out stock ones...

Edit: I found a post elsewhere (http://porsche928forums.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=208) that shows the Mercedes tubes.

The ones Alan has are in post 15 of this thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...on-a-93-a.html

Those look to me like hose I've seen connecting the air box to the manifold on some American cars. I'm going to see if I can stop by NAPA with my less-rotted hose and see whether that have something comparable....

FWIW, Porsche did some tests on air temps and they showed the air flow is such that the insulation is not a factor. So the S4 tubes are functionally just as effective. Why they still went the insulated GTS tubes is unknown to me. The only advantage of the S4 tubes over generic is the reinforced band around the cam cover inlet and of course the pre formed hole.

3" brake duct from Jegs. Pick your style. 10' is enough for two pairs.

I'll take a look. Thanks.

FWIW, I now remember where I'd seen hose like what's on Alan's car - it was on a 1990 VW Golf; the hose that runs from the air box to the manifold there.

Looks like another possibility might be reinforced silicone hose like the "straight sticks" here: http://www.boostcontroller.com/index.php?category=34 About $75 a piece. Anyone used silicone hose for intake tubing? I'd mainly be concerned about kinking/collapsing, but the run is pretty straight in our cars.

Check the brake duct. I think mine was silicone. $54 for 10 feet. Fancier versions available. There's a spring inside to keep it open and it resists high temps. Strip the spring and outer cord from the last 2" or so and it'll slip on.

Probably for noise reduction ....which was also the reason given for the venturi used on all the earlier intake tubes.

I would not use stock GTS tubes - even if they were for free. I don't like the S4 tubes much either - though they are certainly better materials.

I have upgraded again several years ago and I will keep these and if needed replace with the same...

I do also add real "click on" hardware ports for the cam covers - this is quite easy to do and provides a better locatiion & retention fit than any stock version does.

Oh and in case you wonder about the colors - this was done before the intake & cam powder coating & letters - but was intended to complement it..

BTW I got this tube from Bill Sanders (wds928) who installed it on his '94 GTS also. I believe he had to buy ~2x more than he needed as a minimum order - he will know
where from - but I do know he was looking to sell his GTS last December - so not sure if he's still reading posts/PM's on rennlist...

I believe I did find it when I was searching.. this tube fits fine on the ends - no cutting stripping needed - the GTS ends are a nice way to dress it up though.

I'm confused. Are you selling these (should I PM you for pricing), or did you do these as DIY project just for your car? If the latter, what hose did you use?

BTW, the black and yellow powdercoat looks awesome!

Thanks,
Paul

I don't understand the confusion.. I'm not selling anything..

Look at kmac or usplastics - see what they have...

Sorry. For some reason, when I read your post earlier, either it stopped after the line about the color, or I stopped reading at that point.

Thanks,
Paul
