Default I'm In From AZ (New Member)

It has been fun reading so many of the posts here - the rack & motor mount special instructions had me knock out mine this weekend....

Got undermine and started the rack and it turned out that no leak at all... I opened the boots by the zip ties and slid them back and she was a beauty... so I did the motor mounts with the rack in... that was a pain...

I picked up my '89 S4 a few weeks back and she is great. I would not have done anything for a while if it was not for a small rock cropping on a dirt road coming out of winery here near Tucson (Charron Vineyards) scrapping the pan and cracking it.... must be like winning the lottery or something... nothing fast or hard, just its time to go...

When I got the Porsche into Tucson, I went to http://www.redlineservice.com/, great guys and very good to talk with. I spent plenty of time chatting with Chuck and his guys took a look at it for me... we both thought the rack was leaking.... so now I have a spare. It will leak at some point.

They had said no rush on any of the minor issues (MMs and SR), so I was not in a hurry until I sprang the leak

Anyhow, I have been a long, long time fan of the 928 and knew it would be my first Porsche. I grew up around Porsches and events... Ridden and driven many other Porsches, but never owned one until now – right time. I have a slight car problem in that I have had many and few I really love.

I am an Engineer/Program Manager in Tucson, live in Vail – just east of Tucson. I am a big bourbon fan as well. I should have enough to last any 2-3 natural life times at this point. I have juice dating back to pre prohibition. If you are ever in town, stop buy, I have the best bar in Tucson. And if you don’t like bourbon, you just have not tried the right one yet . Other hobbies are cooking, smoking, grilling, wine, bourbon, chess, road trips, woodworking, and many other social activities.

Sucks I missed the gathering up in Scottsdale today. I did not finish up all the work until 8AM and I want to go get the alignment fixed before I go on a long trip… I tweaked it trying to make it easier to get the motor mounts out (did not help – dee dee dee). But I am surly game for the next event as long as I am not on travel.

I am sure that is enough for an into. And yes I read all the rookie forum member stuff or enough of it… I have posted similar threads on the site I moderate or use to moderate… Hey I’m Dick and I found a ’79 porsh 928ish for a grand… you think I could restore in for a few hundred more. Its been sitting for 10 yrs and the guy told me it use to run great

If anyone knows anything about this one, let me know. I picked it up in Burbank, CA and drove it home. I crawled all over it like an ant at a picnic. Found a few minor electrical glitches on the way home:
  • Window and sun roof switches sometimes don't work- ground and cleaning I am guessing
  • Windshield washer does not kick out any fluid - bad pump I guess
  • The fuse was taken out for the rear wiper - I'll toy with that later
  • Rear hatch pulls by the passengers make noise when pulled, but the hatch does not pot.... figure that out later

Real bummer is the AC compressor went out 150 miles into the trip. Nothing I think he hid because it worked great and then died. Already ordered one and I will have it put in once I get back from my upcoming trip.

Let me know if you know the car or anything you think I should know, otherwise I look forward to interacting with everyone.

Welcome...you may not get too many one here soon as the big meet is going on in NC...but they will be back.

Make sure your good on the timing belt service and the flexible fuel lines. With an auto make sure you release tension on the TT to flywheel as this is an issue with later autos. Loosen and allow the flex plate to straighten then retention.

Those items will make you SAFE for now.

Car looks great. Well done.

Welcom Emerald. Looks like you have a very nice 928. Sorry you missed the gathering in Scottsdale this morning (just posted some pics, take a look), but we are planning on a drive up north later this summer, stay tuned...

Beautiful car. It looks like you picked a nice one for your first Porsche. For the window switches, the contacts tend to wear away/corrode over time. You can usually R&R them; however, a better option would be to install the lighted window switch panel upgrade from Paul and Hans, particularly if the graphics are worn.

https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...eferrerid=8546

Price wise this upgrade is competitive with buying a new set of stock switches.

If you have them, post more pictures. Pics of the inside would be cool too.

I like the switch panel upgrade... i see that coming... once I recover from the AC fix and the steering rack, oil pan, the ford Motor mounts (got both those for $30... ), and sound system, gps, XM set up (so not needed, but what can I say )

I'll take some shots with the new goodies in it and some better inside shots later.

I am packing up for a trip to get my kids and camp from South East MO to Eugene OR to meet up with my folks and my sister/bortherinlaw/kids.... Should be a great 2 week trip... too bad I cannot pull a tear drop trailer behind the 928

Em, there is a recent thread here about pulling a trailer behind the 928. I don't have the time to search for you, but see if you can find it. Beautiful car by the way. Let me know if I can help you with anything. Jerry Feather

Very nice. Is this a Rennlister's former car? Upgraded shift **** and steering wheel, refinished intake, it looks like it was owned by someone who knows their way around a 928.

Not that I am aware if. This came from Burbank (North Hollywood area). I flew out... crawled all over it and drove it home. Spoke with John at the Sport's Hauz in Reno and looked for everythig I learned from this site...It was a realestate agent that sold it to me (double lier... hmmm somthing to ponder). It has been well taken care of. I looked at at least a hundred (via the web) before I purchased this one.

I will look for fun. Not something I plan on doing... too hard to corner at 65 with an anchor

Checked it out. Will do when i get back. I reviewed that site a few times and thought about it. As far as color
  • 378 Baltic Blue Metallic (taubenblau metallic) C7.

I can tell you if I purchased this from the dealer, this is exactly how i would have picked it. That is what made me even more worried with I first got it. Too good to be true, but so far, it has held up to the seller's word (less little things that don't really count).

The picture is a little fuzzy, but that looks like a 930 steering wheel, which is a very desirable upgrade for many here. The wheel costs $400+ for a new one. No cracks in the dash and pod is a big bonus as well, it shows the car was stored indoors.

The claim was garage kept its entire life, but hard for anyone to make that claim as the 3-4th owner... but you are right. That was a big deal to me with the dash. There are the typical cracks around the vents, nothing huge, but you can see them when you look.

The body is what is amazing on this. Very well maintained. no dings or dents. Some very minor chips. Glass is good all around, but the tint has some scratches... easliy fixed with new tint.

It has the GT mirors as-well-as the later rims giving it a very nice look.

I would have loced to taken in up and down Mt Lemon last weekend, but I sure as hell was not going to risk the oil pan leak increasing and loosing the engine. The rental car faired well and I got to drive it a little harder on a couple dirt roads

Nice car, welcome!
Great intro.

Be sure to triangulate the local shop guidance with the group here.
There will be various opinions to sort through, but there is enough critical mass that this is the cutting edge.
Few shops, despite years of 928 experience, are aware that the savvy fixes of the past may no longer apply.

For instance, the Ford mounts are no longer used because the 3rd manufacturer changed hands and apparently hollowed-out the solid mounts to save materials costs. I have 3 sets that have collapsed inside of 3 years. Volvo V8 liquid filled mounts are the DIY choice these days as an alternative to the very expensive Porsche part. There isn't a huge amount of run time on them, but the Fords fail fast these days.

Similar story with waterpumps and timing belts and arresting notorious flexplate/endplay movement.

Accumulated tolerances on waterpumps, plus introduction of chinese knockoff castings into the rebuild stream have resulted in water pumps failing and machining the block. There are three good choices out there now for water pumps and the shop will likely only know about one of them --- the expensive Porsche one.

Stay close here before you spend.

Your car looks FANTASTIC, btw!!!
