Default Fuel Leak

The other day I noticed a few drops of fuel on the floor under the tank.
I had scheduled a filter replacement since I have no idea of when it was last done.
After taking off the plate and expecting to see an obvious leak all I can find
is a soaked in gas friction tape leading further forward under the cover that is semi attached to the tank.
Could this be a leak in the tank? Where else would it leak from?

Use these links as a reference to the components and their installation..

Most likely the Fuel Pump check valve is not tightened enough into the pump, or the cap nut is nut is not tight enough, or the check valve seals need replacing.

But check the rubber hoses and other connections too, OH, disconnect the battery FIRST and NO smoking :-)

I found the leak...ta da!
Is this just a tightening or do I have to drain the tank and replace a new gasket or...?
It leaks from the metal fitting towards the tank.

You need to be careful here. The pick up filter/outlet to pump is screwed into an insert moulded into the tank. Over-tightening can lead to the filter threads sticking to the insert, and when you try to replace the filter , it spins the insert and your tank is almost toast - BTDT. My wrench recommends tightening JUST enough not to leak - barely more than hand tight, and use some antiseize. If you can still turn the filter , you are ok, but you may be seeing the whole filter/insert turning in the tank itself. If tightening a little does NOT seal the leak up, I suspect you will need to drain and do some more investigating.

Thanks so much for your advice and help.
Of course the tank is 3/4 full, I have a few empty race cans but they are only 5 gal each. Have to give this
one some thought. At $4.60 per gal (California) one must be thoughtful.
Around the filter and pump all of the fittings are dry. It appears isolated to this one area.
It is the metal plate that is against the plastic nipple inlet not filter or the pump fittings. Is there a gasket between the two?

The in tank pick up filter screws into a brass looking insert moulded into the tank. there is normally a rectangular section rubber washer between the face of the filter you can see and the tank face, but IIRC the tank face is just the plastic body material. I would try turning the filter by its hex VERY slightly, but with minimal force, first to loosen, and if it moves readily, try tightening a bit. If it gives much resistance....its a tough decision. Seal up with PC11 ? Worked me after I stripped the insert loose.

one thing you can do is loosen the tank cap to release the pressure it looks like the strainer has a leak at the threaded insert this usually involves replacing the tank but others have used the PC11 to reseal the threaded ring , draining the tank takes a while as the fuel has to pass through the strainer

First tie a few pieces of old cloth around your wrists and wear gloves while working on the tank,
the cloth will prevent gas from running down your arms
