Default front shock parts-WTB?

Got parts I will need. Not sure if there are upgraded parts, or just buy exactly what was in there?

Early 86S, pics are below. Not sure about the top mounting plate. The rubber is abraded but not cracked or torn.

the little orangish shock bumper is worn down nearly one full donut on one side, so I'm sure that needs replacing...

Also dumb question, but do I need that adjusting collar?

WTB?

That part is just a bump stop. I don't think any of it has worn out. It is usually as you show in the picture, just not torn but discolored..

Collar goes on new shock to give you the ride height.

Default Bump stop

So the orange thing is the bump stop. I haven't seen any pics of these parts. I've done struts before, very similar, even on my 944 I just put in an insert, worked fine.

I'll figure this all out when the parts are in......

There is a cover over the bump stop and usually it is trapped in there and if you do not disaasemle everything it stays there. You just take the insert/strut out and insert it back.
It is shown in the PET.

Judging by the color of the shock bodies, your car looks to me like it has original Bilsteins on it? (it was an option for sport suspension).

If they are, you can get them rebuilt by Bilstein rather than just replacing them. At the least, don't chuck them in the trash!!

Note that if yours are bilsteins, you will need different mounting hardware to fit Koni's or Boge's. The Bilsteins have a threaded body on the shock itself, rather than a collar that slips over the shock.

Here's the bits - I'd replace that bump stop, its already disintegrating.

Default Hmmm, now I'm not sure...

If I want to replace with the boges I have on order, or get this rebuilt or ?.

I leaned on the shock, it slowly compressed, and with weight off, slowly extended. I looks bad, dirty, kinda crappy, but I think it's working as it should. I'll have to check about rebuild. On Macph struts, you just tap off the ringed collar at top, and pull out the guts and drop in an insert. I'm guessing this isn't the case here?

Correct on a Mac strut the shock body is mounted inside the lower tube of the Mac strut.

On a 928 (and other real quality cars) the shock is fitted with a ring at the bottom to bolt it to the lower wishbone or A arm. The crucial difference between a Mac strut suspension (cheap cars like a 911) and a double wishbone suspension (real cars like a 928) is that a Mac strut suspension system relies on the strut (and crucially the rod in the shock) to keep the top end of the hub and wheel carrier vaguely in the correct position. Take the shock away and the wheel can wiggle all over the place.

In a double wishbone system the spring and shock do one thing only - to support the weight of the car and control the up and down movement of the wheel relative to the chassis. Take away the spring and shock and the hub carrier still only has a very defined arc of movement relative to the chassis.

In answer to your unposed question. The adjusting ring is specific to either Boge (combined with the threaded sleeve) or Bilstein shocks (no sleeve threads on shock body) - it is purely there to facilitate adjustment of ride height by allowing the base of the spring to be adjusted up or down.

if you clean the lower portion of the shock you have you may be able to ID it as usually Boge has a stamp in the housing about 2 inches from the bottom.
The PET picture actually shows a Boge strut
Even if the shock you have is returning to its extended position i would opt for a rebuild.
if they are Bilstiens, this is easy to confirm by removing the threaded adjuster collar, once removed you will find either a threaded ring thats slid onto the shock body Boge,
OR a threaded area where the collar rides these are Bilstiens.

Cleaned em up a little. At the bottom I can make out "..ils..." so I guess I know what they are!! BUT I've got the boges coming Tuesday. I feel the need for speed! I want to get it going! I've heard Bilsteins take about 10 days or more for rebuild!

Don't know if I can wait that long, lol.

Looks like if I go with the new I'm going to have to get new or used Boge collars at least.
Damn, I should have RTFF!

Note that per the diagram above - you also need items 2,3,14 and 15 to fit Boge shocks.

Those items are not swappable between Bilsteins and Boge suspension setups - the shock body dimensions are different.

There a test process for Bilsteins in the WSM, to do with how much of the strut projects from the body when fully compressed. The rebuild of these is a bit more than for some Mac struts as they are gas pressurized....If you can find a reputable place, i would rebuild them, having done it one myself.
