Default larger wheels and shorter sidewall tyres - why?

I had 'upgraded' to 17" turbo twist wheels and shorter sidewalled tyres but the combo with Bilstein/Eibach suspension gave a tough ride, especially at low speed.

Long story why but I ended up starteing this driving season on the original rims and stock sized tyres and the suspension woes are much less.....same suspension.

all brings me to the title question of the thread.....comments/opinions.

The reason why air filled tires were invented 100 or so years ago was rubber alone is not compliant enough....when the side wall gets too small you effectively have near solid rubber tires !

I switched to 18"ers because it's hard to find (Y) [186+ mph] rated tires in smaller
diameters. In general, it also harder to find "good" performance tires in anything
less then 17"s nowadays. All the 16" tires that I use to buy aren't available any
more.

My personal opinion is that the "regular" suspension on 928's is quite a bit to soft, so adding the low pro 18" wheel/tires to the plain jane suspension make the ride nearly perfect. I can see adding it to a sport suspension car that came stock with 16" wheels (and then going up to 18") would probably be QUITE harsh! I would think sport suspension and going up ONE SIZE would not be so bad though...

And, I agree with WallyP too....LOVE the style of the larger 18" wheels...that is about all a 928 looks good with though IMHO. The 19" look ok on the GTS's (with their bigger brakes) but I think they get to harsh, so I say go with 18" and be happy!

I have 18" rims on my S4 and I love the appearance. But also, it is easier to get a good selection of modern tires with Z speed ratings. Plus handling is awesome. But yeah, low speed steering is heavy and ride rough. That's why 928s came with such fancy seats.

thx James.

Guys dont get me wrong I do like the style of larger wheels, to a degree but I started this thread as a response to the rough ride with the 17" wheel/tyre combo and current suspension.

I have 18" Carrera III wheels/tyres coming and will have a project to replace the eibachs with new OEM springs.....more to come.

I love the look, and I'm not of the age that my false teeth adhesive is a worry.

its not the teeth Sean....they're ok for now.....its the leg and eye that may fall off

What I really want is to go back in time and order MY 928 from the factory with all the 'modern' upgrades and factory available options.....now wheres the DeLorean?

The 18" wheels are at Colins shop approx 2000 km round trip......for direct comparison I may drive down with the stock rims, fit the new wheels and drive back for real world evaluation. Trouble is Colin is in Africa

I went with the Conti Extreme 245/40ZR18's on the front and 285/35ZR18's for the rears just for that reason. They are .06" taller in the front and .09" taller in the rear. This gives a little more sidewall for a little more compliant ride. My .02. T

It's a conspiracy against those suffering from hemorrhoids.

The performance idea of lower profile tires is less slip angle for better feel when cornering. However, I do notice that Formula 1 cars don't have super low profile so me thinks it's about that concept car look...

That's because the FIA specifies wheel / tire / brake size for various reasons which are designed to limit the performance, not max it out.

I watched the Spanish F1 practice this morning and noticed same

The conspiracy is probably with the tyre companies who are supplied primarily y the oil companies who are in turn controlled by..........

the GOVERNMENT
