My 1982 has one large relay occupying 2 plugs. Is there a way to test the relay? Or bypass it? Where do I check to make sure the relay is receiving power to the proper pins?

Thanks,

David

Been researching on the Forum to try to determine if the relay is the culprit. Did more troubleshooting:

At CEP socket --

Ign Off, Lights Off (Position 0) -- power at 30, 30a, 30b
Ign Off, Parking Lights (Position 1) -- power at 30, 30a
Ign Off, Headlights On (Position 2) -- power at 30, 30a

Ign On, Lights Off (Position 0) -- power at 30, 30a, 30b, X
Ign On, Parking Lights (Position 1) -- power at 30, 30a, X
Ign On, Headlights On (Position 2) -- power at 30, 30a, X, 56, 86M

If this is normal, I have to conclude that the relay is bad.

That all looks normal. To test the rest of the lighing circuit make up a jumper lead* with 2 male quick disconnect spade terminals (pep boys etc) and jumper from the Relay socket Terminal 30a to Terminal 56a - and then 56b (one for low one for high beams). If yes the rest of the circuit is fine and you need to fix/replace the relay.

* its best practice to always install an inline fuse as the middle of your jumper leads (10A in this case) for safety.

I connected a jumper (with 10A fuse) between the terminals as suggested above. From 30A to 56A lighted the low beams. From 30A to 56B lighted the high beams. I'm ordering a relay today (should solve the problem). I'll post the results.

Thanks for the help.

Sorry for the extreme delay in the follow up. Once the relay was replaced, everything functions properly.

Thanks again to everyone for the help.

Nothing like reviving a 7 year old thread but figured its better than starting a new one since the topic is the same.

I've done the checks as described above but I have no power on 56 or 86M.

The problem was intermittent at first, lights would go out on a bumpy road but now they are permanently out. If I jump 30 to 56a or 56b they light.

Is this a hi/lo beam switch problem or main headlight switch? I have tried another used headlight switch but have the same issue. I have the wiring diagram but to be honest I can't read it as the print is so small.

thanks.

There isn't A fuse for the headlights...

There are 4 fuses: Low L, High L , Low R, High R and 1 more for the headlamp motor also.

This isn't a high/low switch issue because it can only be in one state High/Low and you have neither. It not likely a main light switch issue if the pods go up & down properly - it is most likely a headlamp relay issue - or an X-Bus issue (in which case the windshield wipers won't work either).

Alan, Thank you for the prompt response. I have a new relay that has been tested on another car (1986) and worked.

the below is from a post above that I am working with. I know it is not your words so not sure how accurate or valid it is:

At CEP socket --

Ign Off, Lights Off (Position 0) -- power at 30, 30a, 30b
Ign Off, Parking Lights (Position 1) -- power at 30, 30a
Ign Off, Headlights On (Position 2) -- power at 30, 30a

Ign On, Lights Off (Position 0) -- power at 30, 30a, 30b, X
Ign On, Parking Lights (Position 1) -- power at 30, 30a, X
Ign On, Headlights On (Position 2) -- power at 30, 30a, X, 56, 86M

I have no power at 56 or 86M

The wipers work, the only other 2 issues I can see with car are fuel gauge goes to full with ign on but the sending unit is pretty corroded. Voltage gauge light doesnt light up with ignition on but if I put 12v to exciter connection it lights up so gauge light is good.

As mentioned jumping 30 to 56a or 56b lights both low and high beam. Fuses are good and entire panel has been removed, deoxit and all fuses and relays replaced.

This is driving me bonkers...

thank you all in advance for any help on this.

That detail is mostly correct.

86M is only active during the time the motor is rotating the pods up - with the relay out it will stay active because the pods won't be going up.

56 should be active whenever the ignition is on and the light switch is in position 1&2 (of 0-2).

With ignition on and light switch in 1 or 2 86 should be controlled by the Hi/Lo switch stalk -
in high beam mode it is active @12v - it is also active anytime in flash mode (pull stalk).

If these don't work it points to an issue with the main light switch.

Alan,

I have been awaiting a response from you like a kid waiting for Santa...thank you.

So 86 gives 12v both when the stalk is flashed and when high beams activated.

56 also gives me 12v when I insert a fine jewellers screwdriver and touch test light to it. Thinking the connector for 56 has pushed into ce panel. I guess I will pull panel again and reseat that one.

Anyway I can bridge that connection for testing purposes?

Also can you pm me your address so I can send out a little thank you item. Regardless If I get this resolved I'm thankful for the help.

Problem resolved....it was indeed 56 connector pushed into ce panel not making contact with relay.

Thanks Alan!
