Default 87 S4 Project Car

Thought I would post some pictures of my project car.

Its an 87 S4 Manual.. Ive spent the last 3 months stripping it down and today it finally made it to the bodyworks.

Arrived in Tassie

In the shed

Deconstruction...

[IMG][/IMG]

We used aircraft grade paint stripper to remove the paint. It takes around an hour for this stuff to do its work but there is almost ZERO sanding..

[IMG][/IMG]

Today, the view from the 82S as the S4 is taken to the body works

[IMG][/IMG]

Finally there... we are flaring the rear guards to GTS specs, and using metal to do so.. Once thats done it will be painted a deep black with a blue pearl added. It should look jet black in the shade and shimmer blue when the sun hits it.

[IMG][/IMG]

On monday and tuesday we will be pulling the motor and giving it a good freshen up.. good fun!!!

You might want to have them move the steering wheel over to the correct side before they give it back to you.

Thought I might post some pictures of the paint stripper at work. Its a type used on Aircraft and cost $500 for 20 litres which is more than enough to do a couple of 928`s!

After an hour and covered with plastic, the paint is ready to scrape off.

[IMG][/IMG]

It takes less than a minute to get it back to this stage.

[IMG][/IMG]

A few buckets of water is all takes to remove anything left over

And one rear hatch now back to bare metal

[IMG][/IMG]

Although the stripper was expensive it is saving hours and hours worth of sanding. The bodyworks shop doing the respray wont remove paint from aluminium with sanding discs anyway as they say there is a danger of the panels warping if they get to hot.
We`re pulling the engine out tomorrow, good times.
Next week I should be able to post some pictures of my mate flaring the rear guards to that lovely GTS shape.

That paint stripper is some nasty stuff, but it seems to work great. Saves a lot of work I imagine.

Btw why is the antenna on the hatch and not on the roof?

I have an antenna on my hatch as well. Its for the car phone antenna. Looking for a good replacement as we speak to replace the windshield antenna, since the amplifier stopped working ( i think).

a full repaint is a great project,
I would suggest that you have the front and rear PU covers media blasted with walnut shells,
simply sanding them flat will result in the flaws coming through about 6 months after you have it parked in your garage, you can thank me later!

Can you explain this in more detail? What flaws are those?

Thanks for the advice. We are using some special paint stripper on the front and rear covers, but I will ask about the walnut shells and see if its cheaper! I`m pretty keen not to be painting over any of the old paint as its in a pretty poor state. Its had a respray at some stage in its life which is peeling and cracking and I just dont trust the old finish at all.

We spent the day stripping down the front of the car and working on removing the engine. Whilst the car was running, there are lots of missing nuts and bolts, cracked connectors, split hoses and rubbers etc etc. On the plus side, it means I`m not tempted to keep any of the old rubber! At some point its had a whack to the front left but luckily it was a high hit, the rails are straight and true, but the light bar is bent and there is some warping and kinking that needs to be straightened out along the top of the inner guard.

In fact.. it was a borderline parts car... however, I`m planning on this one being my "forever car" so I`m pretty keen to get it right

Some more photo`s from today, apologies for the quality.

Thats a Holden Condomodore in the background.. with the radiator out, the damage to the front left is not nearly as bad as we thought, in fact, it was the best news we had all day...

[IMG][/IMG]

Engine out... as we progressed through the day, it became more and more obvious that this engine really did need to come out... The clutch had clearly had a hard life.. nuts and bolts were missing everywhere, and it was leaking like a seive.. I will certainly be ordering lots of bits and pieces off Roger! ( thanks for the alternator for my S, works a treat! )

[IMG][/IMG]

Perhaps the most depressing picture of all... its only onwards and upwards from here.. having said that, I was lucky that during the day a mechanic turned up at my mates bodyworks to kill time and had actually recently pulled a 928 engine ( highly rare car in Tassie ), and was happy to stay and help, but even better, whilst pulling the nasty top 2 clutch housing bolts, another mecahnic turned up for beers that did his apprenticeship on V12 Jags... the bolts came out in seconds and he was impressed by the amount of room we hgad to work with in the engine bay!

Tomorrow I`ll be pressure cleaning the car and motor. Then its time to let my mate go to work with the hammer and paint whilst I start to revive the engine.. To be honest, Im finding it really depressing right now and I am wondering how the hell I`m going to get it back together... hopefully a good nights sleep and an early start tomorrow will help.. after 3 months Ive just seen deconstruction, I`m hoping just a pressure wash will at least be some forward progress...

On the plus side my S is running better than ever right now ( apart from frozen door locks )... its at that lovely stage where it just feels light and right, engine revs freely, steering is perfectly weighted, throttle needs a man sized shove and the seats ooze leather scent and feel oh so comfy..I spent around 10k on the S last year and it was worth every cent so I`m hoping this S4 manual will be worth it!

3 hours of pressure cleaning, and 14 cans of degreaser...

Its amazing how just cleaning the car makes you feel better about a project like this..
