Default 88 S4, catalytic convertor removal = more HP ?

I live in Florida which:
"July 1, 2000, the State of Florida abolished the auto emissions test requirement for all vehicles throughout the state"

So my question is, if i remove the cats will I get more HP...?
Or will it hurt the reliability of the 928S4...?

It normally is a heavy piece of trash on most cars 20+ years old, anyone with any experience please let me know what positive or negative gain/comments you have.

thank you;...!

https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...of-course.html

It equals a ton of stink.

New higher flow verts wont cost anything useful in HP, and you wont stink it up.

Removal is still illegal with a potential $2,500 fine for an individual and $25,000 for a business under Federal Law. Replacing with a well made X-pipe will add some power and noise. If you remove the cat note that it is valuable for the amount of platinum inside of it and if you opt to throw away that " heavy piece of trash ...." Throw it my way Taking it off will not hurt your car might have some negative impact on global pollution but nothing compared to all the coal being burned in China. Kind of like peeing in the Pacific Ocean while you are at the beach.

Thank you James...! Since you obviosly convinced me to gut the CATS and melt down or sell off the platinum, I have a couple questions....

How much platinum is the CAT made up of, just internals, how much weight (if you would guess)...?
And where in the CAT do I find the platinum...?

I happen to be a Gold/Silver and now Platinum investor and now you have me very very interested...please provide me some info...thank you, owe and if its a good amount you have my word I will cut you in on 1/3 the profit... : ) (really)...

If you simply gut them they have a horrible resonate vibration that gets very annoying look into the X-pipes they do work ! The cats have enough value that people are stealing them from cars/truck parked on the street. Owner starts the car in the morning and it is a wide open exhaust !!!

This may give you some insight, but keep in mind they want to buy your catalytic converter.

Personally I thin the "China's worse, so I can be a dick too" argument is juvenile..your car will stink, and you wouldnt wanna sit behind it in traffic either. Im just the kinda guy that wont do something that I wouldnt wanna suffer either.

You wont miss the 3Hp that new cats in an X pipe would cost you anyways..its insignificant.

Do what you like, but this will come back to you at some point. Annoying POS smog laws are not becoming fewer...

Thursday I am picking up a 1965 F-150 pickup fitted with a 428 Cobra jet with factory tri-power now that stinks and is really "juvenile". A well tuned S-4 runs very clean without cats just fails the visual.

James, there is no visual inspection outside of cali.

Marinesniper,

I can tell you exactly how to recover the platinum. It's pretty easy, but very VERY hazardous. Firstly, you must break up the ceramic honeycomb inside the cat and get it all out. That powder is NOT something you want to breathe. Once you get it out, you dunk it in aqua regia, which is a 3:1 mixture of concentrated hydrochloric and nitric acids. Both are dangerous by themselves. Aqua regia fumes, giving off chlorine gas and nitrosyl chloride, and will corrode anything nearby that is metallic. You may also have to boil the aqua regia to get it to take the platinum off of the ceramic substrate. Once you get the platinum all dissolved, you filter off the remaining ceramic substrate (the palladium/iridium/ruthenium that is left behind isn't in significant enough quantities to warrant recovery), and then you can electroplate the platinum out onto a seed wire, usually also made of platinum so you don't contaminate the sample. Of course, you have to wait for the aqua regia to stop fuming, which can take more than 24 hours to complete, during which time you have an extremely dangerous, horribly smelling bottle sitting around (hopefully not) your home. When all is said and done, the amount of platinum you recover probably won't be all that great, and even if you do, its only worth anything if you can *prove* its platinum. This is why people buy bullion coins that are minted by a government. Those coins are specced at a purity and backed by an official authority that people are more likely to trust, rather than some backyard chemist who claims "its pure platinum". If I was an investor, I would run the other way as fast as I could, or offer to buy your "platinum" at a vastly reduced price. There are plenty of people not above alloying with silver or nickel to expand their profit margin.

So in summary, don't do it as an investor, only do it as a crazy *** chemist, like me. Oh also, con HNO3 is a controlled chemical, as it is a necessary ingredient in the manufacture of most easily accessible explosives. There are ways to get it that are invisible to the authorities, but those add even more physical danger.

EDIT: Also, I don't want to be the one to tell you this, but now is not the time to invest in precious metals. The price is going to tank, and then there will be a lot of people with gold they bought at 1000+ per ounce that have to sell at ~375 an ounce, or hold on to it and pray that the price goes stupidly high again, just so they can recover their investment (which won't beat inflation so will still be a loss). I sincerely hope that you invested in gold ten years ago and are now looking to sell (smart move, IMO), or otherwise have access to a really underpriced gold source (i.e. little old lady jewelry) that you are turning around and selling as quickly as possible.

How much in them? Worth just enough for thieves to cut the cats off every GM car in the parking lot at work one night. About 10 of us when out to start our cars after work and it was quite the surprise!

The older cats (like ours) have more in them. Some scrap yards were paying $200 per and the 928 S-4 cat when cut apart sells as TWO ! The story in Ca was they were being "processed" in Mexico since all those nasty chemicals/gasses/dust are involved. Now they must photo Id you if you are selling a cat.....

Most states that have an emissions test have a visual inspection for catalytic converters. I know MA and GA have one.

Without the cat, you are emitting about 30 times as many toxic fumes as with cat.

Imagine 30 928s barreling down the road instead of just you. Would you like to live next to that road?
