Out of the closet

Well, I took the leap and decided to try another breed:thumbup:

I found someone on the 996 forum to check her out this morning and got
the green light. It'll look good parked next to Rocket:evilgrin:

She my get another set of wheels in the near future:).

LightStriker 04-09-2011 01:06 PM

This lack of 928 content. :p
At least post a pics of your 928 in the middle of that.

Jon B. 04-09-2011 01:23 PM

Maybe I didn't understand the post well enough, but I would not get rid of those wheels. Sport Techno wheels are rare on 996s.

As long as they are factory wheels and not replicas.

More like going to the dark side than "coming out of the closet".....You had me wondering there for a moment....not that there is anything wrong with that.

Darien 04-09-2011 02:01 PM

:roflmao: Easy Jim...

AO 04-09-2011 02:08 PM

I think coming out of the closet is appropriate in this case... That car is so gay.

(looks pretty good. Enjoy the addition)

Glen McCartney 04-09-2011 02:09 PM

Ohhh, that's too bad Darien.

Nice looking ride

Black Sea RD 04-09-2011 02:23 PM

Sweet looking 996! Congratulations on your new addition.

Those wheels look great on it and if they are genuine, why change them?

Ninespub 04-09-2011 02:24 PM

There are those who are concerned that you are Bi: You like having eight in the front AND six in the rear?
Looks nice, BTW.

James Bailey 04-09-2011 02:30 PM

Twice as likely to have a date.......if you are Bi...

Marine Blue 04-09-2011 02:30 PM

Congrats Darien! Looks like a beauty!

Enjoy in good health!

IcemanG17 04-09-2011 02:32 PM

nice.....I'm interested in your driving impressions in regards to handling......

James Bailey 04-09-2011 02:33 PM

Now you have a bunch of OTHER model specific items to learn about. They do work quite well are fun on the track.

Trip.. 04-09-2011 03:22 PM

I like the wheels.

Shane 04-09-2011 03:35 PM

Congrats Darien!!

jcb928 04-09-2011 04:36 PM

Great buy with the low miles...

SeanR 04-09-2011 04:50 PM

Congrats buddy, have you already looked at what is available for boost?

They make a killer supercharger for those things.

pcar928fan 04-09-2011 04:57 PM

I like those, but the only 996 I would bother with would be a Turbo. Have driven several Tip 996's (and TT's) and they are great, but I certainly wouldn't trade ANY of my 928's for one! Accept a 996TT or newer (ie. 997 n/a or TT). Some day I will have a 996/997TT in the garage next to all the 928's!

Darien, that one looks like a GREAT car... care to share on miles, condition, cost? I am interested since I don't normally keep up with the 911 market (other than recently seeing a VERY NICE 53k miles 996TT change hands for $35k!!! The shop that works on my cars was doing a little bit of work on it and I told them I wouldn't sell EITHER of my GTS's for $35k and was stunned a 996TT as nice as this one could be had for such a reasonable price!)

Darien 04-09-2011 06:14 PM

James,
I would've loved to get a 996TT, but out of my price range. Without a doubt, they are very reasonable for the amount of car you get. Let's just say that I got a great deal on this one:).

She just turned 64K and seems to be un-molested and in great condition. The PO installed those wheels and the more I learned about them, they will stay on the car. It's got the 6 speed tranny which will be fun...I plan on driving it daily.

Good job Darien, and yes, $35k is still a lot of money for a used car, but in terms of bang for buck, it hardly could get any better than a 996TT! A few tweeks on it and you are at 500HP easy...talk about wicked fast! OMG! Drove a totally stock one for about 800 miles and it was WICKED FAST (Just ask Jon B! He rode with me a few times!)

Nicole 04-09-2011 07:24 PM

Congrats, Darien! I, too, like those wheels.

Bertrand Daoust 04-09-2011 07:34 PM

Very nice car.
Congradulations.
If I could have 2 Porsche, it would be a 996 for sure. Love them too.
Is it a S, 4S?

ROG100 04-09-2011 07:50 PM

Great buy - does it have side or rear grass discharge like its air cooled brethren?

Bertrand Daoust 04-09-2011 07:57 PM

Rick Carter 04-09-2011 08:35 PM

Nice addition.

James Bailey 04-09-2011 08:50 PM

The water cooled 911s are not holding resale value partly due to very large numbers of lease returns flooding the market. The residual values got pumped up far too high in the quest for more business (lower monthly payments) and most are opting NOT to buy "their" car. Which puts downward pressure on prices and that snowballs as more people decide that the buy out is too high. The similarity and high number of shared parts with the Boxster (much from the door forward) also has made the "911" more average looking/less special but far more profitable. But does mean you can get a lot of car for not a lot of money. The intermediate shaft bearing isues of course have not helped either.

Shawn Stanford 04-09-2011 10:55 PM

Your mouth to God's ear! I'll be looking for a C4 in a couple years...

Uh, yea.

Congrats Darien! I love the wheels too. :)

What year is it?
Do you know if the IMS issue was mitigated?

Tranny's and Bi's and...

Car looks great-drive it fast and in good health. I'd swap the wheels with the 928 ;)

Here's a few next to Rocket...I'm liking the wheels:thumbup:

karl ruiter 05-13-2011 03:55 AM

I've thought about doing this, but I am scared about ISB problems. One nice thing about 928 is that at this point we know where all the serious issues and have fixes for all of them. Maybe I am obsessing about the ISB thing, though.

linderpat 05-13-2011 10:00 AM

There are fixes for the ISB too, it's just that they are not easy to do. Not a job for the weekend wrench.

Darien - love the car. You don't see many red ones in the 996 and up models either. They are mostly black or silver. I really love the red.

White Lightnin' 05-13-2011 11:02 AM

Curious they put silver accents inside the front grill only... the way they like to coordinate color combos, the mirrors and other bits would be silver also.

Any plans to modify it in any way?

porsche928guy 05-13-2011 11:14 AM

It is amazing to me how current the 928 still looks sitting next to a car almost 20 years newer. Your GTS mirrors help a lot but it is such a timeless design. Two great looking cars you have there!

ISB? Do you mean IMS failure?

pcar928fan 05-13-2011 12:43 PM

Nice pair there D! Lookin' good! I agree with Jeremy, you never hear folks saying 928's look old and seeing one parked next to a "new" Porsche really brings it home...they ARE still modern looking, despite having been designed in the EARLY '70's!

SeanR 05-13-2011 01:30 PM

Looks great Darien, they look good together.

Sorry I missed your call, will give you a ring back this weekend.

Th Dude 05-13-2011 01:35 PM

Super sweet score, D! Enjoy it in good health, bro.

Tony 05-13-2011 01:36 PM

Looks great!! Clean lines.. Im always contemplating picking up a similar year Turbo...just dont have the room. On the topic of "coming out of the closet", hows the Tranny thing coming along?:icon107::roflmao:

Darien,

I have never been a big fan of 911s, but that is a sharp looking car, CONGRATS.

Darien 05-13-2011 08:06 PM

Thanks all...she has a few "untold quirks" compliments of the PO, but nothing too serious. I'm already discovering it's not much more difficult than than the Shark when it comes to DIY items.

I just purchased a Durametric, what an awesome tool...diagnose and clear faults:thumbup:

It's very clean and the engine pulls nice. The car is lowered approx 2" with differnt springs, but the ride is smooth and man it's tight in the curves:rockon:

My love is the 928 and always will be, but it's apples and oranges in comparison.

Abby Normal 05-13-2011 08:07 PM

You'll have company soon as I am picking up a 2003 C2Cab this weekend..

inactiveuser1 05-14-2011 09:55 AM

Darien,
Nice car,
I'd still would like a 997TT someday.

eugkim 05-14-2011 10:32 PM

I recently did the same thing, but wouldn't say I came "out of the closet."

http://images3a.snapfish.com/2323232...%3A43347nu0mrj

All it took for me was a test drive, and I was smitten. I couldn't resist - the 996s are such a great value. There's no way I can justify spending the extra cash on a 997 when my new toy is more than I can handle. I'm sure a side-by-side comparison might tempt me, but I couldn't be happier with it.

inactiveuser1 05-15-2011 11:44 AM

Eugene,
Nice Turbo ride!

hlj821 05-21-2011 02:17 AM

Darien, looks great. I like the wheels on it. Are those Sport Technos? Wish we were still in Vegas to go cruise it. Enjoy!
