Its an '83 so it is an interference engine, I know that for sure because I checked by rotating the engine by hand with the cam belt off.

Firstly, many thanks for all your opinions and experiences, and I do understand the concerns surrounding rebuilt water pumps.

However I do feel that with a good quality replacement bearing (outer roller - inner ball) and seal, the job can be done successfully.

If I screw it up then I only have myself to blame - and another engine rebuild.

I'd rather have a pump rebuilt by me with care and understanding, than a bought in rebuilt pump.

A new pump would be lovely, but I have better things to spend my money on.

I will let you know how I get on.
John

Willingness to experiment with DIY might reasonably depend on the potential level of damage from a failure.

Did I miss it or has nobody asked John: _Which_ 928 do you have?

The way I figure it the first time I rebuild something I'm about half as good at the job as the second time, which is half as good of a job as the third time, etc etc. Places with measuring jigs that do hundreds of rebuilds have had unacceptable failure rates. You want to experiment on your car I say go for its your car. I bet you do a fine job after doing it a few times.

Use a plastic impeller so it going bad doesn't mess up the block, and keep a sharp eye on the belt tension and any sign of a leak which may catch a bearing failure before it breaks the timing belt and all the associated damage to the valves and cams.

A very sad 1983 Auto Euro, with transmission cooler failure, and a gearbox full of rusty brown, was once, red ATF.

CIS injection, engine now completely in bits, all nuts, bolts, washers, brackets and pipes at the platers.

Last of the cir clipped torque tube drive shaft models.

Next job - Sort the fuel distributor, WUR and injectors.

After the water pump - of course!

My reply was for Roy's post. If his rebuilt pump fails, all he has to change is the pump. If your's goes.......well, sound like you know what will happen.

Let's say you go for it, how will you know where to buy a good quality bearings cartrage? The ones sold on ebay are probalby cheap chineese.
