Default Interior lights never go off

Up until yesterday, all interior lights worked fine. All 3 positions worked as expected and lights would go off by timer or when the car started.

I then drove 20 miles in a torrential rain storm, parked the car in the garage and went in the house. Ten minutes later I went back into the garage to get a beer and noticed all interior lights were still on. I opened and closed the doors and hatch back still no change. I then hand checked the door switches and they moved as expected. I couldn't fiddle with the hatch back switch.

My only solution was to manually move each light to the off position for the night.

Any ideas on what to check next are appreciated.

I am newbie with my 1989 S4 and this forum but did successfully replace the driver's side door handle following the instructions on Rennlist. Awesome to say the least.

Thanks

Your little red marker lights on the ends of your doors will still be on so you could still end up with a flat battery.

My guess is one of the door switches has died...could also be that the hatch switch has just come lose from its base where it is screwed in to the bottom of the hatch receiver. I think you actually can get to that w/o removing anything but the tool tray but I am not positive about that.

Sounds like a door switch (or a lead to one) has shorted to earth somewhere. Not uncommon.

After I read this post I was dreading going back to the airport parking lot, after two days on the road, at 8PM to find a dead battery. I was lucky not because you were wrong about the little red marker lights but because one of mine is burnt out and also because of the brand new Duralast battery. The beast started.

I'll post my findings once I figure the bugger out.

first i would open the hatch and check for a wet floor if so the hatch switch is prolly wet also then remove the carpet and inspect the CE panel and floor for water it usually comes in over the blower grill edges see if any of the fuses are corroded if you find this then remove the relays and small them and shake them any burned or with water in them should be opened

Default Fixed - Interior Lights wouldn't go Off

Symptom - All Interior and the red door panel lights would not turn off after exiting the car no matter how long I waited.

The culprit ended up being a faulty back hatch light switch. Upon close inspection the wires that were crimped to the switch had several frayed wires. I suspect the conductivity finally dipped below an operating threshold and the switch failed. The shark thought the hatch was open even though it was physically closed so it kept the lights on.

Thanks for everyones input on this.
