Sounds "special"...Edition, that is. Factory autobox with a "GT" engine.

No affiliation...

For Sale: 1988 Porsche928 S4-SE
Color: Slate Gray Metallic
Automatic Transmission
Mileage: 112,000
Price: $17,000

This Porsche is a special edition 928 S4 SE that was only built in 1988. Only 5 were built with an automatic transmission for import into the U.S, of which this is the only known example remaining. There were 35 SE cars built with a standard transmission, all of which were only sold in the U.K. This car has many upgrades over the standard 928 S4. Improvements include: more aggressive camshafts, larger brakes, improved suspension, painted body-color larger rear wing, aerodynamic side skirts, “turbo style” steering wheel and 345hp engine (compared to 316hp).

This car has a fully restored interior, using the original leather and carpet from Porsche. It has the original two-tone (black and gray) interior, a very rare option on the 928 S4. The interior was restored due to age, the leather had become hard and the carpet had become “pilled”.

There is one small ding on the leading edge of the rear spoiler that can easily be repaired. The spoiler is made of fiberglass instead of being covered in a rubberized material as was on the S4. The exterior body has no damage, and the car has a clean Car Fax report. It has never been in a wreck a fire or a flood. This is a very nice example of the 928.

The engine has never been overhauled or rebuilt. 112,000 miles is considered very low for a 1988 Porsche engine. The engine uses hydraulic lifters, so the valves never need to be adjusted. The engine has been leak-down tested, compression tested, dyno tested and brake dyno tested. Test results have shown the engine to be in excellent condition. The timing belt, all front-end timing gear and the water pump were replaced at 110,000 miles. The engine is stock and has not been modified in any way. The car has been meticulously maintained, and I have COMPLETE service records from the day the car was sold. I have had the car serviced by the same mechanic in Colorado Springs (a Porsche and 928 specialists who works on Porsche Factory Team cars for the Pikes Peak Hill Climb) for more than 10 years.

Factory Options include: Rear Seat AC, Sun Roof, SE package, 17” Club Racing wheels, Larger “cross-drilled” brakes, two-tone interior.

Non-Factory upgrades: Borla Exhaust, Carbon Fiber interior accents, Blaupunkt stereo with Bluetooth.

Included with the car: Original Exhaust, Complete Set of Factory Service Manuals, assorted spare fuses, relays, fuel pump, brake wear indicator wires, several Porsche 928 books, etc…

This is a true “collector” and very rare 928. I have priced this car low because I am moving and must sell it. This is truly one of a kind!

Wow and Wow - if true me like a lot. A VIN will tell us a lot.

Hilton what do you think????

What a load of BS. Doesn't even mention that it would be RHD if it were really an SE, and all the "factory improvements" over the S4 he quotes weren't factory. No SE's had black and grey two tone interior (All had black leather with black/red pinstripe cloth inserts.) I could go on but I won't

It is a very elaborate story and it would not be beyond Porsche to do this - stranger cars have happened.
We will see as the power of Rennlist will sniff out the truth.

He says it has the SE option code - if that is true it should show up on a VIN search.

You rang?

My initial reaction is its BS - too much doesn't add up.
  • 42 SE's were produced, all manual, all RHD, and all accounted for in the UK (although at least 3 now reside in Australia and NZ)
  • The SE package included no sunroof, special SE interior using red-pinstripe fabric inserts, red piping on the seats, and full black leather interior (dash, console etc.). This car has a sunroof, and a 2-tone leather interior (pretty common actually).
  • The wing is aftermarket - all the SE's have a regular S4 wing.
  • The car is the wrong colour - all the SE's came in only Black, Silver, GP White, and Guards Red.

The SE is the RHD version of the rare 928 Clubsport - it has all the core clubsport elements except the addition of a few creature comforts for the UK market.

Other clues to an SE which I would lay money this car doesn't have are:
  • The AC compressor on an SE/Clubsport is the lighter weight 10PA20C (normally found only on model years 90+)
  • The "SP" designation on the engine number (M28/41 SP) which indicates its a factory blue-printed clubsport engine.
  • Sport seats (standard on the SE - an option on the Clubsport)

They may as well be saying "this is the ultra-rare test car Porsche used for development of the GT engine"

I have not seen this car at any of the events out here
FWIW if it was a rare car it should be selling at twice the price
if its true and it does have a special engine it will probably need a top end refresh
otherwise the price is about right for a good condition 1988 S4

I am with Hilton...I call BS on this one! IF it were real there would be ALL KINDS of documentation and the car would be a $40k car even with 112k miles on it and not a $17k car! Buyer beware in this case!

I just re-read it.. he's claiming the wheels are a factory item too.

What are the odds that they're Made in Italy replicas?

So in summary - wrong color, wrong wing, wrong interior, wrong options, wrong wheels, wrong gearbox.

But other than that, its just like an SE.

Unless it also has the wrong engine.. in which case its nothing like an SE

Anyone requested a VIN from this guy yet?

If not...I will. Now I'm curious.

I just sent him an e-mail asking for some specifics. Guess I shouldn't have used my business address though.

Go get him Derek!!! We should flood his inbox!

I emailed him and asked him for proof and that if it turned out to really be that ONE OFF RHD SE for the US, I'd drive to CO tomorrow and bring him cash!

I'm rather skeptical of the claim for many of the reasons listed above. That said, Porsche did some strange things from time to time, so who knows?

Might I suggest to the OP that "928SE" be included in the thread title? I can't believe this thread has had less response than any of those by Porschedonald.
