Default The last mile. . . for the odometer

Hey all,

I bought my 88 S4 in November. It is in such fine condition, that I have not yet done any significant repair work, while I have been driving it daily. Naturally a couple of months down the road something broke, and it was the odometer! 133592 is the last mile it showed.

What a surprise. I wonder what is the general culprit, is it cable-operated? Or would the head fail? I'd like to fix it soon, so it still serves a useful purpose.

Cheers,

Sean

Hi Sean:

The odometers on the pre-89 928s do fail quite frequently. If you do a search here for "odometer gear", you will find more details on the causes and the repair options.

If you can't fix this yourself, you could send your instruments to Palo Alto Speedometer - they could probably get it back to you within a few days.

It's likely to be the odometer gear (disintegrating) and you'll need to pull the pod and dismantle the speedo to replace it. Haven't checked, but wouldn't be surprised if Dwayne has a procedure on pulling the pod .. and maybe the gear.

I assume the speedo is still working and it's just the odometer ... meaning you're getting signal from the pickup at the rear of the diff housing?

Yes that's right, the speedo is fine.

OK well, glad to learn it is going to be the tough stuff on this one.

Thanks,

Sean

Don't worry, it is an easy fix. The hardest part is trying to figure out how such a small gear can cost so much. There is an excellent writeup on Dwane's gurage. Search is your friend. I just completed the job on my 79. Take your time, work in a clean place and it is pretty easy.

Good luck,

I thought it was a real PITA...but Dwayne's write-up sure made it a heck of a lot easier.
