Default I could torch my car right now

Ive gone through many ups and downs in my cars ownership but what happened today just takes the cake.

My registration was due so i needed a smog check last week. No biggy do it every year.
With a set of cats on, the car passes no problem. I run with an Xpipe and no cats all year up until this point when i have to smog. I get the car up..install the cats...check my flexplate...smogg...life is good for another year....9yrs of this now and it does get old..

This process works but , like i said, was getting old so i decided to order a set of high flow cats from ROG. As per Rogs's usual service, they are here in a matter of days.
I figure putting these on once and for all will save me this yearly hassle of crawling under my car thats 20inches off the ground and swapping out components. Besides the car still sounds great with the new cats on it, it smells better and I'm not out too many pony's

Soo...The hi flow cats went on, i smogged and car passed with flying colors. The passed result is fwd'd to the DMV so i can register the car.

Now i go to renew my registration on line last week and it has an "administrative block" on it per the lady at the DMV. She says i need to go to the DMV emissions testing facility on the other side of town.
I'm thinking to my self WTF, why, i have the form here that says it passed.

Turns out in a nut shell. My number is up!

Each smog test is issued a VIR number. My VIR number was "flagged"...randomly apparently. There was no way it was the kid at the original smog station as he just walked around the car..did the sniffer..and that was it..didnt even look under the car for cats in the first place!

So i head over to the emission testing station and ask what this VIR number is about. Basically my car has to be retested by the center over there in its stock emissions form. As many of you know, my car is not stock. It will however blow clean as FN whistle when tested with just Cats on it.
So....currently
1) my smog pump is un hooked and gaawd knows where all the old hoses are.
2) diverter valve, air injection and assoc pluming has been removed...vac lines etc
3) Crank case ventilation system..ventelates but not where its supposed to
4) the stock cats are up in the attic
5) and the new hi flow cats i just put on are basically worthless 300 dollar paper weights unless i can produce paper work saying they are certifiable replacement converters for this car , they are needed, and do not require air injection..
Rog, Mr Lomas, is there any such documentation with them? A part number that can be referenced? ie CARB etc...No sweat, i know the answer already i think. "off road use only"

So..see that creek over there, made out of $hit....Im up it with out a paddle and i have to get my hands really dirty to paddle my way out of it all all.

F'N A!

Ya know, that nice new steel braided fuel line under the hood...may just develop a pin hole leak!

I cant even begin to fathom what i have to do now to get it "legal" for the tree huggers of the world. FU and your landfill polluting PRIUS..VOLT..LEAF batteries!! they don't give a rats a$$ of what comes out my tail pipe..it just has to have all the right EPA parts on it at this point.

I'm half tossing the idea now of tagging it and insuring it back in MN. No emissions there at all. But that will have its complications also I'm sure.

I will probably be calling you Mark for a bunch of weird used odds -n-ends emissions parts and hoses unless i can dig them up in my own little parts bin in the attic. Surprisingly, i think i have kept most of it..........its just the HUGE HUGE hassle of doing this. You cant even imagine.

Oh...and my tags are now late

Vent over.........for a while at least.

You are lucky you are not in CA. I don't think any aftermarket 928 stuff is CARB tested or EPA-friendly as we prefer horsepower gains, not losses. Also it's upwards of $25,000 I heard a while back to get CARB approval on aftermarket mods.

Another thing is, how in the hell are those fools going to even realize your car has a smog pump? I had a guy look at the power steering pump and said that it was a smog pump. I had no arguments there..

There needs to be more inept people working these smog stations. This is one area I agree should be unionized!

Sorry to hear about all of this Tony.

To get your car's smog equipment back, maybe someone on the board can loan you the parts from their car. If there's anyone that has a track only 928 S4 here, you might get lucky if they still have their old emissions equipment.

My number may be up soon too. They are getting REALLY strict now in Communist California.

That sucks. I'm guessing you could borrow most of what you need for the visual. It's hard to believe they would be under the car checking part numbers. As long as the cats are on it, I'd leave them there. You will need the pump. hoses, vents, etc that are visually recognizable.

Someone around there has to have that stuff avail for a few days. It's a hassle to put it all on, then take it off again. If it looks ok, it should pass the new inspection.

The two feet of snow outside my garage doesn't look so bad after-all.

Good luck Tony and step far, far away from those fuel lines.

How do personal property taxes work in Vegas compared to MN? Maybe you should buy a small plot of land in Wisconsin. $85 per year or so.

Welcome to California, Tony!

Roll the dice and bring in in as-is. Nobody knows the 928.

Tony, find out what you have, and what you need. I'm sure we have it sitting around here. I'll send it to you for shipping costs and you can use it to pass the EPABS.

Tony... get you a neglected 928 for a daily driver, convert your beast to "off road only", do the ORR, or track days, or bonneville... whatever floats your boat. Save another 928. Go faster than you can now. Tell the Man to 'hold this'.

I feel your pain. Hang in there, bud.

Meanwhile, we are flying planes around the globe that take 3000 gallons of fuel just to take off. Or the years when we flew 24 hours a day, B-52's that each took 3000 gallons per hour to fly.

Don't worry, soon you won't need a car. You'll need a boat.

Yeah, I just bought a tensioner WITH the air pump bracket. Just in case.

It's easy to be frustrated by this bs. Where's the perspective?

Tony, that sucks. Does Nevada have a class of registrations that are exempt from emissions testing, like classic car?

As a compromise solution--torch a Prius.

Yeah, but then he'd have to root for the Packers.

Not sure it would be worth it.

Tony, the title of your thread is a little off...I don't think it is your 928 you are made at but the idiots at the EPA and the local jurisdiction of it that you need to set on fire!

why would Las Vegas NV require a CARB (California Air Resources Board) cert....currently there only is 1 that is "approved"...I think Maganflow makes it.....

smog is a HASSLE.....its nice having race cars that don't have to do it....but taking EVERYTHING off to go back to stock, pass the test....then put EVERYTHING back on is a total hassle..... At least its every two years around here....
