Console screw tab repair

Just a quick post - wish I'd done this sooner, as its both easy and effective :)

I bought a couple of the repair kits from Nicole (www.hookedoncars.com) to fix the center console mounting tabs where the screws go on the side of the tunnel.

These tabs break easily, and the rear end of the centre console moves a little.

To fix, I roughed up the plastic and one side of the aluminum repair bits with some 80-grit, drilled the 3/32 holes for the self-tapping screws, and then spread a layer of epoxy on the mating surface before screwing the plates on.

Simple fix, and I'm very happy with the result, as I can now actually screw the rear end of the console down! So if your tabs are broken, get one of these kits! (one kit includes two plates, and the screws, and an instruction sheet).

(note only 3 sets of wires from the console switches.. this is one of my no-sunroof cars!)

I did this repair on my console using the same kit from Nicole. Didnot not think about the epoxy but that is a nice touch! The kit works great!

Sometimes the easy fixes are the most gratifying.

Nice kit - always hated those plastic tabs.

Yep - that's a pretty popular item. It works very well, as long as there is enough meat left on the old tab. Usually they break at the eye, so that's rarely an issue.

Another thing that breaks every now and then are the plastic hinge stoppers of the glove boxes. We have a repair kit for those as well.

Now that Nicole's OOB, is there an alternate source for these screw tab repair kits? I googled but didn't find anything.

Google found him. No tab kits though.

That's where everyone gets them, garage9 in BC.

Here is the link.

Or you can just make your own like I did. Less than $2.

Jager Engineering still offers those kits on their Garage9 website (www.garage9.com). They still offer most of the items I used to rep for them.

Please support Jager Engineering, and keep them motivated to continue offering cool products for our 928s!

This is a timely post! Found out I needed this exact fix last week (its amazing how many little plastic bits are broken on my car) fixing the clock and stereo replacement. Ordered them from Garage 9. Don't know if they are in stock however.

Thanks for whoever resurrected this thread!

Yep they are a great company. I used the brackets from them on my 85. I only went Mcgiver on the 87 due to timing before SITM 2014.

I'm sure they stock them.

Bump. Ordered a set today. Still available, hopefully. :)

They are. I bought a set a couple months ago, just in case. I made my own set and it worked, so I am saving the garage 9 set for one of my other 928s.
