Big, BIG thanks to ThomO, who basically did a PPI on the car, and now I'm its proud owner! Thom reports that the car has been well maintained, even the fuel lines are new! Minor issues with paint, vacuum hoses and aluminum ball joints.

I pick it up on Feb 12th, if not before. Going to drive it like it was meant to be driven all the way to NJ, stopping in Iowa to visit the in-laws.

Pictures of the roadtrip to come.

Thom, I hope we can hook up while I'm out there and show my appreciation in a barley and hops sort of way.

Hooray for this forum too, and what a great resource!

Congratulations, and kudos to ThomO for rolling up his sleeves and diving in!

It's been great to see this cross-country collaboration develop, and will be fun to see how the cross-country transport unfolds.

I'm still looking, and will probably be doing something similar since the ones that have met my criteria/budget, etc. are clear across the country.

Mike, GREAT BUY!!! Thom, super job on getting out there for a fellow 928er! That is what I love about the 928 community in general!

We had a different car PPI'ed today in FL for one of my hommies here in Austin...that didn't go so well! S4 ('87 I think...black/dove gray or linen...couldn't tell) pouring oil out from under it, every panel with a big scratch or dent, drivers seat shot...YUCK! Total POS! Asking the same price as this OB, but man it will take $10k AT LEAST to make it a nice S4, sounds like this car is NICE ALREADY!

Now join the 928 Owners Club (if you have not yet done so) and you will be able to see who and how many 928OC members are along the route of your trip home incase you need to call someone for some help!

Here is a call out to all 928OC members if you have not included yourself on the "Roadside assistance program" thread please, Please, PLEASE do so! the more the better! We gotta help each other out to keep these cars on the road!

Great buy...glad you guys bought...or I would have had to! LOL!

Ok, so I'm coming to my senses regarding driving this thing home.

The equation goes 30 year old car + aluminum ball joints + winter weather + wife's peace of mine + not much difference moneywise = ship it

On a related note, has anyone tried 928motorsports ball joint replacement kit? I like the idea of replacing these without needing alignment.

you need to replace the lower ball joints not the uppers.
You will need an alignment afterwards,
its a good idea to swap them out before you do any driving the alu BJs can fail at any time

The uppers kit I got from that supply house worked great until I tried to apply the boots.
The boots were wrong for the car. No possible way they could seal. No help.
Shop around. 928 Intl or 928RUS should have the proper kit.

Yeah the car turned out to be a nice ONE owner car. The paint was the only real detracker on the car it was original but looked like it was driven through a sandstorm or sandblaster. Pretty common in Colorado. All panels lines up nicely all were the same color no clear coat damage which to me means the car was garaged mostly, in colorado the sun eats through clear coat like butter

The previous owner loved the car as apparent from the mechanical and interior condition.

It even still had the mythical belly pan on it.

The issue I saw are as follows

some sepage around the trans pan
some sepage around the oil pan
aluminum BJs
heads have been off new gaskets not factory
some added wires in the ce panel area (one set was for radar detector)
radio is factory blaupunkt but does not work no power
All electronics and hvac work
broken hinges on cassette cover
no rust in the battery area or the floor pans by the ce panel
Vacuum lines are original but still pliable
some replaced the rear suspension link bushings
new tires so I coule not see any obvious alignment issues

had the car on a lift so I got a pretty good view of it

Lots of maintenance is obvious, someone loved this car

new fuel lines even between the rails and injectors

Mike I am so glad you are thinking of shipping the car I really think it is the way to go.

I was happy to help out, it was my way of putting something back into the Rennlist well that I have been drawing from.

Great evaluation Thom.

I was going to try to check it out today but work didn't allow time for it.

Glad someone on here is picking it up.

Mike - congrats on what looks to be very nice car. It amazes me when what seems to be a well cared for car, one owner no less, ends up at a Toyota dealer, where the first thing they do is place a dealer sticker on the back. What struck me about this car is how clean the engine compartment looked - cad plated bits still showing gold color, with no signs of corrosion. This was obviously a fair weather car. Best of luck with it!

Is the ball joint carrier fix something a novice could do? Afterwards, could I drive it to it's alignment?

I am a novice and I did mine in the driveway in a few hours. Likely you will only need two steel BJ's and 2 eccentris as two of the old ones can be reused. Biggest issue was stubborn hardware but your sounds so clean I bet they won't have the corrosion mine did.

I made a steering rack centering bolt by grinding the end of a M12 X 1.5 bolt down to a point. I used an old magnetic laser level that had a 90deg rotate function to mark the starting point with the wheel raised and tire off. I used the alignment marks to adjust back to roughly starting position.

Thanks jwolan, seems like a straightforward take it apart, put it back together operation. Do you happen to have the torque specs handy?
