My bro had a 02 C4S with 30Kmi. beautiful car. He was driving it home and had his engine blow on him. He had the great IMS failure which grenaded the engine and porsche acts like they have no idea how this happens. The unfortunate thing is now he says he will never buy another porsche again......... except maybe a 928. I had no problems hanging with him or he was hanging with me.
I have been on many PCA runs and the 911 guys cant believe how well the 928 takes on cars 20 years newer.

Just my .02

Horses for courses, the 928 is a GT car that can be made into a deadly effective race car because it is a fundamentally logical design. It is funny that people have used the 928's layout for high performance cars (notably the Corvette) but nobody has copied the 911's layout in the past 40 years.

His (obviously tongue in cheek) statement reminds me of Ettore Bugatti's statement that W.O. Bentley built "the fastest lorries in the world" at a time when the big, heavy Bentleys were beating his light and elegant Bugs on the track.

That being said, I came quite close to buying a 997 for my daily driver but decided I wanted something a little different. As it turns out, something rather like a modern 928.

My line is, you can polish a turd, you can roll it in glitter, make it shine, but in the end, all you have is a shiny POS.

I dunno about the cayman,
I was at the last track day with my 87 auto, I couldnt push it cause my rad wasnt cooling enough.
He was unable to loose me at any point. Had I been able to go full steam I would have been able to pass him on the straight, and loose him in the corners.
This was in the advanced run group. He was running R888 on all 4 corners. Gutted, and caged.
I was running slicks, but full interior, no cage.

Even in my $256 1984 Automatic 928 "Estate" I can keep up with just about everything on track...it takes a well driven GT3 to get away from me....and thats only in the straights..... :>) My lap times are just a touch slower than what a "spec" 911 turns....not to shabby for a "gut and go" racer.....

Anderson typically beats ALL the pure race 997's on a regular basis...including the $300k+ machines with 800hp....

Well, yes, the 928 is certainly a great track car with little modification, and it is rewarding to go out and **** off the 911 snobs- but, they aren't ALL snobs- I've run across a lot of 911 guys who come over and compliment the car- usually a bit incredulous because the 928 is SUPPOSED to be a pig...
On the other hand- if I had the $$, there would be GT3 in my garage right next to the 928...and a Panamera for bringing friends and kids along....I'd like my old 914-6 back as well. And a friend has a really slick 356 outlaw I wouldn't mind having...list goes on....

I guess I just like nice cars, including Porsches, and don't really feel that having one precludes liking any of the others. I've met plenty of snobs who feel that what they have is the ONLY one "worthy" of discussion, but I generally just walk away and find someone less pretentious to hang out with.

Nick (the guy that said that) is about as far away from being a snob as anybody I have ever known.

He loves cars, all cars, he runs several of the local "Team" dealerships, to put a feather in my own cap, he will not let any of the dealer mechanics touch one of his cars, they all come to me and a lot of the dealerships cars.

I think he is a member here, I know he is over at RW.

He is also one of the very few folks that I personally know that can drive a old 911 to the limit and back, at will.

Agreed. While the Cayman is impressive, I still think the 928 is even more so. Track day here at PIR on the full road course and banking. I was still warming myself and the GT up on first couple laps when I waved a new Cayman S and Boxter by. Once warm, was back on their tails, passed them both and pulled away. GT was on Kumho Victoracers but otherwise stock/fully dressed, not sure what the Cayman S was riding on. After the session, the Cayman S driver came over to see the GT and was amazed that those 928's were THAT fast! He was nice snd complimentary about it, but astonished none the less. And BTW, I am by no means a great driver... maybe in my own mind..., nah, I've got a LONG way to go and a lot to learn. I know... "seat time, seat time, seat time..."

I've been with this Forum for quite sometime.
What irks me is that I feel this forum at times allows other 'groups' to conjure up a little low self-esteem, about their choice of purchase and stepping into the Porsche Club.
It's about other model owners that look down upon us.

Yes, I believe it's true about the others. Why do they seem that way?.
I'll tell ya.
Because the 928-pre GTS is so availably 'cheap' it is shunned by the other Porsche domiciles.
If the 928 were of high price and always held at that price, the respect would be towards all v8 owners.
But it's not. It's like pass the grey Poupon(sp?) and you only have the mustard in a very large container by French's.
I feel that 928 owners, along with 944,924 are the most dedicated owners.
I don't make big big $'s per year but what I can afford I spend on the car.
In ratio to most of the mucky mucks wages , I spend more on my vehicle ( I did ) then they did concerning their wages.
That makes me more of a Porsche fan than the other types.
Sacrificing money and time to do your repairs yourself and being more intimate with the brand.

I DID have the option of purchasng a 911-BUT- the 928 was always on my mind.

Would it may me feel better to degrade the 911, especially the newest model?-NO- because I don't give a **** who is driving what model , just that we all decided to put on that Laedorhosen ! (sp)

Greg, lol- yes I've looked at a few Vette forums- there are certainly a few brand snobs there! There are also some good people, and they do some great stuff with those cars- Z06 is on my list as well.
My son, who is an electrical engineer, says you just need a filter to keep the signal-to-noise ratio high...

Another answer to "You can't make a racehorse out of a pig":

"Well, someone thought they could make a racehorse out of a Beetle... at least the pig is also a mammal."
