928 sightings in New Zealand
Helen and I just returned from a two-week trip to New Zealand last night. In our travels there (roughly involving driving from Auckland to Queenstown and hitting a lot of points in between), we encountered only TWO 928s.
Luckily, I got photos of both.
928 #1 (January 3/4) was a very original-looking (regular 7-slot wheels, which you can't see in this photo; no other mods based on a quick look) S4 in good shape, was at the same small motel ("Aspen Court Motor Lodge") we stayed at in Kaikoura. I kept asking people who walked by whether or not they "owned the 928 in the parking lot", but I never found the owner.
928 #2 (January 5) was a nice surprise... I was just walking along the main highway that goes through Arthur's Pass National Park (walked down the road a way from our car to get a few photos) and heard a familiar rumble. Turned around just in time to snap a (not very good!) photo of this interestingly-modified car. Certainly someone will recognize this one!
Whoever you are... if you would have stopped at the next scenic viewpoint, I would have caught up with you and said, "Hi!"
I wish I had my 928 there for this trip: great roads, nice curves, beautiful scenery. Unfortunately, we had to enjoy it all in a couple of cheap rental vehicles.

NZ seems to have a lot of Porsche's per capita including a lot of 928's. Over the last 5 years I have seen over 30 different ones for sale on trademe.co.nz. There are also a lot that are not for sale - not bad for a country of about 4 million people. At one stage there were 4 or 5 within 45min of me with a total population for that area of 40,000.
A lot of out 928's are ex Japan, including mine.

NZ, particularly the south island, is a great place for this car although the opportunities to stretch its legs fully are limited. Lots of windy, interesting & relatively (out of peak tourist season) traffic free roads.
When I brought my new to me car down from Auckland I parked in the car park to the right of the one in photo # 1.
I am not sure of your exact route to Queenstown but chances are if you had been paying attention you may well have seen mine out of the garage as you drove by heading down Lake Dunstan to Cromwell.
Would have been nice to catch you while you were over.
