Default Fuel Injector Cleaning..what would ppl like to see or know?

A buddy of mine here in the SF Bay Area, has a company that deals in high volume fuel injection systems, and he's my go-to guy.

Im headed up there Sunday, and taking my totally junked up stock injectors that came with my 88S4 that sat for most of 12yrs, and also taking the 'cleaned' 5l Mustang injectors I got that allowed the car to actually run...this serves two purposes.

-See how bad an injector can be, and still be cleaned
-How 'good' is a sample set of $50 Ebay injectors?

I'll be able to take all manner of photos, get good before/after videos of each set, etc.

So..what questions, etc..would ppl like me to ask about the process or anything..and I'll do my best to get those photos and answers!

Where to get the pintle caps.
How to remove the screens and where to get replacements.
Anything about the process.
Thanks

Every thing mechanical has a wear limit, all the cleaning in the world is not going to put new metal back in a injector.
For the price of replacements from some of our suppliers against the price of a REAL converter, well not much of a choice there as far as I am concerned.

Im unclear.

Ive not suggested that cleaning would repair death. The results of this may well indicate that dead is dead, and $50 is just $50...

Anything you would like to see about the cleaning process, or like to know about it?

Actually, no questions, they are put into a heated ultrasonic cleaner, usually three or more times, I have a big pro ultrasonic cleaner for this.
If they have 100,000 miles on them I am going to replace them if they show any bad spray patterns, I test all injectors that I suspect in a test rig on my own cars, on a customers car, they just get replaced because it is not cost effective for me to test them if any turn out to be bad, or turn bad soon after.

I do know this much, on the car cleaning is just a way for some mechanics to split the owner from his money unless you are not doing a injector cleaning, but trying to get carbon off of the back side of the intake valves.

Again, this is just one of the many areas that most will not agree with me.

i would love to see how the real pros do it, I could be far off base on this, I have been wrong before, a lot actually.

I may well find..that I'll have no reason to disagree with you at all...just something a friend does as a biz..that I can get access to, and take some pitchers...

Long story short..not much to know or see.

I MIGHT find 32v pintles however..still on that.

But..I found my problem.

I wonder which injector aint like the others...hmm...

The Fleabay $50 mustang injectors I got..after cleaning tested the same as pre-clean, within 2% of each other..and overall, flowed as they should..of course, nothing like the 96lb and higher injectors my buddy works with..damn..garden hoses...

look at the fuel flow on a top fuel car, it is nothing short of amazing.
this is just one injector on a old fuel car, they flow a lot more now, plus there are two in the hat.

pretty sure this is a old 60 GPM pump, I think there are 2 of them now.

I have questions.

How long do injectors actually last? Is 100,000 miles the end of their life, as Greg suggests, or should they last longer? I've had cars with over 200,000 miles and they still have the original injectors...which have never been even cleaned. How much do they actually wear? It would seem that they might be able to find metal hard enough that it doesn't get worn by the fuel passing by it...so is the wear from the fuel or does the wear come from the actual opening and closing.

If an injector has a "bad" spray pattern, is this from wear or from gunk? If they spray good when they are returned, will they revert to the "bad" spray pattern after a few miles, because they are worn?

When should we not clean injectors and just buy new ones?

Does routine professional cleaning extend injector life?

How often should they be cleaned, or do you only clean them when there is a problem?

Are there different grades of injectors, even in the same manufacturer's line? Or is everything created equal? Is there a reason Porsche "Bosch" injectors cost so much and yet Ford "Bosch" injectors are so cheap?

I've probably got more questions...I'll think about it.

The short answer is..when you do the top-end refresh..send em in, and get back a fully functional balanced set.

Most of the answers are "It depends", "Maybe/Never"...etc.

In the aviation world, there's a cottage industry on balanced injectors. Getting all the holes to run very similar F/As is rather important because we run them so lean. I'm kind of wondering what the delta flow rates between bone-stock injectors is suitable. 2%, 4%, 6%, 10% delta from least to most in an engine?

Inquiring minds want to know. Will they mix and match a batch of 8 injectors?

We stock the pintle caps, spacer washers and top & bottom O rings.
For both stock and 4 hole Ford injectors.

It's my understanding that there is now way to actually "balance" and injector. They way to have a balanced set is they check the flow rates of a large batch of injectors and pick ones that are within a degree of tolerance to the others.
