Default How many 928's are still on the road?

Seldom do we see any 928's, even here in California
Always seems to be a small "school" of sharks on E-Bay and always donor parts cars but, how many are really on the road.
Are there any stats on how many are still in the US?

Remembered this when I read your post. 6 years ago so I would guess its easily under 15K now maybe a lot under given the financial collapse of the last few years and many more on the brink due to lack of care. I like the fact that they are rare but I hope its the lower powered ones and the ratty ones that are falling out of commission, nothing personal to anyone.

So worldwide around 20-22K would be my wild guess and that seems enough of a number to get koni to do a run of FSD shocks for us, considering some of these turkeys have them;

I think there are WAY more on the road than that... There were 56k built for the world and over 25k imported to the US...I can't imagine that 50% are GONE... that is just to high a number I think. It would be VERY interesting to know though.

I did meet a new 928 in town at Chic-Fil-A yesterday. Looks like the car was NEAR a fire because the damage is to the VERY front of the car. Looked ok from 75' but kept getting worse the closer I got. At least it is still on the road and the guy is trying to save it. I was in my '94 GTS and it BLEW HIM AWAY how nice that car is!

The worldwide numbers I've seen seem to indicate (61056) 928 total production. I do not know if any here can just give a SWAG on the numbers left.

JB's number of 16,781 SIX years ago is no guess.

The fleet was on average 19 years old then and now a third of that time has passed. If 8,000 US cars left in the first 19 years and another 6 years have gone by with neglect, age and wear accelerating then I might be conservative on the US number.

From my reading of car sites over the years I believe that the US market appreciated the 928 more than others. Plus these other markets have much tougher inspection requirements, higher expenses, and higher fuel costs. All which lead me to believe that non-US cars will have a much higher attrition rate. That's how I arrived at my wild guess. I could be way off on the foreign number.

I don't have any real data to go on ebut there are two junk / scrap yards thatr I have visited and each has 4 928 hulks. I personally know 5 other owners who have junked cars or have multiple cars being parted out. Sadly I don't think that 50% attrition is out of line.

Considering the youngest cars are 15 years old and the oldest 33, that is pretty damn amazing if it is even above 30%. I hope it is 50%.

I would be curious how it compares to 911's of similar age and also Ferrari's (as percentage).

I just took a 7,000 mile roadtrip through 23 states in Oct and Nov and saw Zero 928s on the road...and I always look. However, whenever I spend much time in Portland, OR or Seattle, WA, I usually spot some. Not sure what this says.

Lots of Boxsters and 911s though.

one thing is sure....as time passes the number of nice 928's that are properly maintained goes UP every year.....since all the undermaintained buckets are dying and donating themselves to the nice 928's that are left..... In 10 more years 928's will be between 25-43 years old.....and most that are left will be at least decent....since the buckets will be gone.....

Once all the buckets disappear then the values will go up...since only nice ones will be left...

This data should be available via the DMV of each state. These would probably be pretty accurate numbers since a registration requires paid insurance - at least in the states I have lived. Getting a hold of this info would probably be a monumental task, despite the fact the DMV could run the query in a minute. Would be interesting though to give the local DMV a call and see what they say...
