Fun Thread: The thing I found from previous PO work under the hood...

Found a new one yesterday. Had small leaks on both cam covers, pulled them off and previous mechanic put 87+ cam cover gaskets on my 85. Very obvious that they are not the correct shape but he just jammed them in there! First pic is the correct one, second pic is the one that was installed.

Curses..
Found two new things tonight at the shop, overhauling the throttle body.
1) One of the brass vacum nipples was glued together, and gave it up and fell apart on me..someone must have tried to strongarm with pliers the hose onto it while still fully assembled. The end of the brass nipple was a tad pinched, and it was bent and cracked..then glued.
I'll use something like McMaster #5058K472 to replace it..remove & drill out the remaining brass base, and insert this.
2) Uhh..someone went in with what looks like a chisel, to replace the TB bearings before. They still center in, but require sealant to seal properly on one side. The other side looks like the standard dremel approach, but the TPS side was pretty bad.
Too fun.

It pulls out.
Looks like McMaster #44555K142 will work fine.

There's not enough electrons to post all I've found.
- Pipe wrench marks on the front pulley, a TB job done wrong
- Stereo hard wired to the 15 bus with no fuse
- Seat adjustment switch wired backwards
Lots more....

1. Splice in immobiliser, remove, add another, remove, add another .... left ten miles of cable and numerous switches and relays.
2. Al ball joint housing failed ... trashed/ground down various low hanging items ... Porsche dealer solution was to fit another Al secondhand one ... not steel ... sheesh!! .. and the other one was on the way out! I guess they figured they were on a winner for repeat business.
3. Water wrecked interior door panels from panel shop leaving off plastic door liners.
4. Panel shop obviously couldn't figure out where all the rubber seals and o-rings went to fit the rear spoiler so just used silicone .. which leaked like a sieve!
5. Numerous ... s**t!!, can't find the right bolt or nut ... this is close enough and it's right here on the shop floor.
6. Taped together vac lines.
7. All the usual interesting archaeological finds under the carpet/seats and every hidden space.
.... heaps more ..

I was helping Jim Morton do some work on his car. When we removed one of the front seats there was a German candybar from the year of manufacture under it.

How about a very old Lojack, with 2 additional alarm systems, aftermarket, all hanging off the main wiring harness? It also had the stock alarm system still active. '86 Corvette, not a 928, but too good of an example of what can be found to ignore it...one morning no start....I had not been in the wiring previously. What a fine surprise that was. Only took about 3 days to clean it all out, find and reconnect all the chopped off original wires, and start the car again with no sparks/flames or hiccups...I did eliminate the factory alarm too, as that was the one that failed in this mess...I had a rats nest of wire removed that was unbelievable....the stereo was wired in the same fashion.....

1) Torque tube tunnel stuffed with fiberglass housing insulation... Paper backing burnt in several spots.
2) Full suspension/brake swap... 79' running gear (including alum. ball) installed on an 89 S4.
3) Tall marine battery in place. Had battery door propped open with a stick so it wouldn't short out the posts.
4) Hole drilled and tapped through flexplate clamp directly into drive shaft to prevent clamp migration...
5) Many, many fuses "upgraded" to higher amperage...
6) Stereos and amps wired into hot leads of existing circuits and insulated with masking tape. Speaker wire twisted together and used as hot leads.
7) A bloody jacket stuffed in the trunk!

In August, I had to modify a gasket like this on a co-worker's Accord. Canadian Tire installed one from a DOHC kit on a SOHC engine. The only way to salvage it was to cut out a section and use some silicone where the two ends met. Worked like a charm but it's not what I would have done if it wasn't Sunday afternoon.

Replaced my stereo today. Wanted one with bluetooth that could play from my iPod. While removing the previous aftermarket stereo I found a virtual rats nest of wires. Best thing though was the 25 feet of excess wire wrapped up a ball and stuffed into a heater vent. No wonder I never got any heat to the passenger footwell.

My car's PO didn't turn his own wrenches, but I did find some rolling papers and a lighter under the rear passenger carpet. He was a pharmacist, so I'm sure he smoked pot for medical reasons.....

I found over $5.00 in loose change as well as a 10 peso coin......which was the most valuable of any of the coins....about 85 cents IIRC. I spent it all wisely at 928 vendors......and it didn't take long either Of course then there was this little surprise...the "bad head gasket"
