BTW, those gears in the background are what's on my car. You can get a sense of how worn they were.

Greed will get them…I think they read our RL post and than when they see a post like this they don’t honor what they put out on eBay – For me it’s the last time I’ll do biz with them again.

Honorable suppliers and/or capable members will step in and get/produce these parts at reasonable margins, let them eat their inventory.

Same outfit had them a week earlier for $152 and 10 in stock I did a buy it now -paid- eBay stock changed to 8 and the next day was told they where OE they’re out of stock and the P version is $400

Another one (eBay item # 390266572038) had only one and when they checked it the next day prior to shipping it they found it was damaged, go figure?

finishlinecoatings.com

I sold a set of refinished S4+ gears 2 years ago here on RL. If they are not dished, might be worth a $50 try. I was really satisfied with the dry coat lubricant they used.
Good luck!

I just replace my gears. I had some wear on the teeth. Can they be refinished and coated with a superior coating?

Yours were pretty badly worn. Sometimes only the goldish coating is worn through. Those are candidates.

I recoated the gear on the right, but the one on the left had teeth that were no longer flat across the top. Once some of the tooth itself is eroded, the gear is no longer usable.

These were all in good enough shape to recoat:

Comparison shots:

I've been using these for the last 30k miles and they still look great.

Keep in mind that the coating did such a good job that my cam bolt wasn't able to lock the gear down. I had to use some sandpaper to clear the coating away from where the bolt would grip to stop the gear from slipping every time I rotated the engine while using PorKen's timing tool.

Big Dave, what is the process for getting your gears recoated?

The process I followed to get me gears recoated was to contact Lorna at Finish Line Coatings (www.finishlinecoatings.com) and confirm a quote and ship them the gears with return postage. I think I had the new gears in under 2 weeks.

Interesting. Coating may be the best alternative. Thanks for the link.
