Hi D. M. I have your cover finished and packed together with a couple of pieces of .090 ABS plastic for you to try making the fuel pump cover. Let me know if I can give you some more pointers about how you might do it.

I'll get your's and several others in the mail later this morning.

Thanks for the orders, Guys.

So I took Jerry's advice and attempted to re-create the fender well fuel pump cover on my OB 78. I had found a picture online of one of these sometime back and was able to obtain the rough dimensions from the picture. After I did some measuring inside the wheel well I was able to work out a final size for the blank. I trimmed down a piece of the plastic he sent me by scoring with an xacto knife. This gave a nice straight edge. I then clamped the plastic between two pieces of wood and warmed the plastic with a heat gun and bent one edge to a 45 degree angle. Flipped it over and bent the other edge.

I drilled a couple of holes at the correct locations and then trimmed out a slot at each location with a scroll saw. Used a file and dremel to clean up the slots. A test fit showed I needed to do a little clearancing around the fuel lines above the pump. After several tests and more time with the Dremel I was satisfied. Here is a picture of the final product and some shots with the piece mounted on the car.

Outstanding, David. Next time I would suggest that you also clamp something thinner over the open part of the plastic so that when you heat it you are heating only a very narrow strip where you want the bend. That will minimize the shrinkage at the heated bend and warpage away from the bend. Nice going in any case.

Jerry, I posted in one of your other threads too, but can you post a pic of these covers for MY'83? Are they flat like the originals to provide a nearly perfectly flat bed for the carpet above? I'd be interested if these are the exact shape and function as the originals and attach using stock tabs and the rotating bar. Also do you have a website with all your products shown? Kind of hard to google your individual products... :P
Cheers,
Rick

The picture of this Spare Tire Cover in my first post in this thread is the Cover that I provide. It is formed, so it is not flat. It does however form a firm and flat surface for the carpet over it. The only other Cover I provide is the same formed one, but with the swivel latch affixed to the cover rather than being in the car. That one is for the 78 and 79 only. My Cover will fit the 83.

No web site.

I ordered/paid Jerry on Saturday for his spare tire cover, and it showed up on Monday.

It's a very nice sturdy piece and fits perfectly - money well spent, thanks Jerry!

I just about always have some plastic blanks to form these Spar Tire Covers out of. Right now I have three of them formed and cut out waiting for finish filing of the edges and cutouts. I have one also fully finished to the 78/79 version with is a little bit different in that those have the latching swivel on the cover rather than on the car as with all the later 928s. I also have one blank that is drilled for the forming dies; and a full batch of 14 blanks ready to be drilled for the forming dies.

I have kept my price for these at $90 and $95 for the early ones, even though the price of the plastic has just taken a sharp jump. I suspect that is kind of in association with the 250 to 300 percent jump in other building materials lately.

It takes me right at an hour to compete one of these covers; and my shop rate for these kinds of fabrication is also $90. I guess I'll probably be raising my price for these one of these days since as I get older my time becomes more rare and much more valuable, not to even consider the materials.
