got an S4 would love to get one of these so can tweak the settings. sent a pm asking to get in on the run. the folks in Zuffenhausen are generally right on though with their map. still having a source for ecus will be awesome. will help to further immortalize these cars. your a demi-god

I'll be in on this as well when it becomes available. You're brilliant.

I suspect what might be the biggest seller would be an upgrade path for older cars that included EZK and knock detection.

Mini update yet again

Ok, no new progress so far, my time get sucked up by work

Will have decent progress this weekend, should have 90% of the LH functions implemented at the end of the weekend.

Unfortunately next week I will not be able to test and debug, I'm sending my shark in to have the tranny looked at. Keeps on slipping, and might need a recon. At the worst it will take a whole week to recon.

A very rough estimate is that by the end of next week's weekend (if i get my shark back by then) everything should be done and then I will get the remaining 4 prototypes going. I will let everyone know.

Seeing that there is enough interest I will make a revised version, and will also look into making an EZK replacement.

I thank everyone for their help, support and responses.

Step 8: Programming Phase 3: Fuel adjustment according to MAF and RPM

Ok, here is the video...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kE74lI-tjiE

...and here is the explanation.

I finally got the A2D converter going on the CPU, took more effort than I thought it would, but at least it is working. In the video the fourLEDs at the CPU indicates the voltage of the MAF.

I have implemented a basic fuel map that uses RPM and MAF to get the fuel. All of the fuel values in the fuel map are guessed, so the AFR is completely wrong.

The software is only set up to work with a maximum MAF input voltage of 6.6V. The next revision I will allow for higher voltages if anyone there wants to use another MAF/MAP that goes higher.

But it is good enough to drive with the car. I do not have a vid of me actually driving with the car because of my tranny messing me about. Tomorrow the tranny will be removed and fixed, so I will not be able to do much more coding during next weekt till I get it back.

While I wait for the tranny I can continue with some of the coding

If you weren't in SA I reckon someone would have donated an auto box by now.

Fantastic work. You make it sound so easy... but we all know it isn't. Cheers!

If you use RS232 don't you need FCC certification for interference? Why a serial port these days with USB?

Nice piece of work though.

I dont think you need FCC for a standard serial interface. The frequencies are extremely low and the power output is also minute, so I doubt that one would need to go through the whole FCC thing.

I only have the serial on there in case the USB for some reason doesnt work. Say the CPU runs out of flash memory when I include the USB driver stack, or the amount of processing required for USB comms will interrupt the normal operation of the unit etc.

Seeing that I havn't done the software by the time I did the PCB layout I decided to add provision for the possibility of not using USB. With the next revision I am most probably going to remove the EEPROM and the serial port. Both are precautions and looks so far that it wont be neccessary.

Micro Update

Turns out my gearbox is fu**ed in every way, the PO drove for 12 years with less thatn half the required oil in the tranny and it kind off messed it up.

Busy with the reconditioning of the box, but will take a while. To not sit around doing nothing, I have assembled prototype #2 over the weekend. I will continue the coding tonight.

Will give more updates later

Turns out I have a core 88 trans. The reverse lock out broke off and creamed a few gears. I sold the 5th gear set and used the needle bearings out of it for and early box. But there are some good parts still there - let me know if you need anything.

Default Step 8: Programming Phase 4

Turns out I have a core 88 trans. The reverse lock out broke off and creamed a few gears. I sold the 5th gear set and used the needle bearings out of it for and early box. But there are some good parts still there - let me know if you need anything.
Thanx, i had a look but shipping stuff to south africa costs way too much. I managed to get all the replacement parts locally.

Turns out my flexplate was broken, one of the three "points" was sheared off. Had to wait a week to get a replacement one.

One thing though, my speedo stopped working after the tranny was reconditioned, it worked 100% fine before, I'm thinking maybe the pickup in the box is not aligned properly. Any advice on this or references to posts/the manual/websites on how to diagnose this and look for the problem will be greatly appreciated. I'm taking the car back in tomorrow to have a look.

But now to the part you all have been waiting for. The proper update:

Step 8: Programming Phase 4: LH Functionality

Ok, during the time the car was in for repairs I continued working on the coding. The following stuff is implemented and works:
  • Fuel Pump Safety switchoff - After 10 sec of no engine turning the fuel pump will switch off
  • Low battery compensation - When the battery voltage drops the injector open time is increased to compensate
  • Resonance Flap - The resonance flap opens and closes depending on the RPM
  • Idle speed control - The idle speed control signal is sent out.
  • Closed Loop - The exhaust sensor is read and depending on the adjustment pot the fuel is enriched or leaned out (Can be enabled/disabled)
  • Initial engine warm up sequence - Mixture is enriched upon initial engine startup
  • AC Enrichment - When the AC is switched on the fuel is slightly enriched
  • Auto Idle Drop - When the box is in neutral the mixture is leaned out a bit
  • Engine Temperature - Mixture is enriched when engine is cold
  • WOT Mapping - Uses a different fuel map on WOT

All of the above is working and is customiseable (how much to enrich with what temperatures, the amount to enrich/lean out with the AC, Idle Drop etc)

And to show off a bit I have two videos of me driving around the block today with the new software.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROYZuZNc_b8

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Z2-5_UK_Kg

The following still needs to be done:
  • "Accelerator Pump" - When the pedal is pressed the mixture must be enriched to compensate
  • USB - The coding for the USB port still needs to be done
  • Windows Tuning - The interface to tune and adjust all the settings must still be written

If i miss anything let me know. I am going on holiday on friday, and will most probably not be able to do much coding. Will resume early January.

Another thing that will make my life easier in the meantime: If anyone has a fuel map for the car can they post it here? (table format, text, excel file). At the moment im making slightly educated guesses at the mapping and it works, but it is still not optimal and I wont be able to dyno it until all the last crap is sorted with the tranny.

Check the pickup sensor on the back of the tranny, if it is in upside down, it will not work. There is one screw that hold a clip across the sensor. Try taking it out and flipping the sensor over.

Also check the connector in the spare tire well, if the mech forgot to loosen the sensor before dropping the tranny, he might have pulled the wires out of the connector.
