Arnoud,

Thanks for posting the pictures. Glad to hear you are enjoying the setup, your comments are greatly appreciated.

I think you will see that there is a gradual improvement over the next week or so even after that first massive change.

Thanks
Hans

Just curious-in terms of the front-has anyone compared Hans' setup to the offering (for more $$) from Focal?

I have an 89 s4

It appears to have an Alpine system. I assume this woud be aftermarket?

What this set be considered a substantial upgrade?

Test OB speakers were sent out. Waiting to hear back from the field.

S4bill - These speakers are a considerable upgrade to stock, and likely an upgrade to any speakers currently installed, however they are designed for the stock doors, and your doors may have been modified for the Alpine speakers.

hans - I was looking at my speakers last night and thought - i bet my doors have been chopped up to make these Alpine speakers fit.

Any pictures of what an 89 door should look like from the factory?

I wonder what the odds are if I remove the speakers the door skin will be original.

Maybe I should just remove the speaker and measure it and see what my options are.

Billl,

I dont have any pictures handy, but there is a factory metal plate that is riveted to the back of the door skin that holds 4 speednuts. If that is still there, it should work. However, if your speakers are good, working, and you are happy with them... there is little need to upgrade.

You could consider a subwooofer instead, I can help you out with that too.

I am not looking to spend money to just spend it. I am content with the speakers. Let me rephase. I think I am content. I was listening to a specific CD and a weird sound was coming from one of the passenger side speakers. I need to re-investigate that.

I would be interested to hear what you recommend in reference to a subwoofer. I am also curious where it would be installed.

What I really want to do is replace this Alpine unit. It is a casette unit with a 6 CD changer mounted in the hatch area.

I would like to hear recommendations as to what woul be a good replacement that would install without any major modifications, would work well with the existing configuration (even if I replaced the speakers) and would offer some modern features such as usb drive, bluetooth and such if possible.

At the risk of sticking my neck where it doesn't belong, I would guess that Hans will point you in this direction for a subwoofer:

Matt,

I have the rear drivers here. I need to make mounts for them to install in the 84-87 cars, do the crossover design, and then modify my front tweeter housings for install in the rear location.

I still do not know what I plan to do for the 89+ cars, as those grills are much more challenging to work around. I could make new grills housings, but the left and right are both different, so I am expecting it would cost me over $3000 in tooling for both the left and the right, which I dont think I could recover.

Thanks
Hans

Hi Hans,
Thanks for the reply. Glad to hear they're coming along nicely.
When you said 84-87, does that include my '88 square grilled type?
Is it just a square grill over the same speaker mounts as previous MY's; so I would still be compatible with your 84-87 designs?

Thanks again,

I was looking at mine last night - yep, they're shot. I am running your front drivers alone with the rears disconnected at the moment.

I have the existing mounts, and I have a Dremel.
I was wondering whether I could make a 6.5" fit the existing "spacer" if I surgically removed the central boss & existing driver.

What size is the large driver that you are proposing for the B pillar?

Are you suggesting dropping the rearmost driver?

I do suggest removing the rear hatch drivers, or just leaving them disconnected.

The new 6.5" drivers do not fit in the 89+ round frames, even with removal of the original speaker guts. 4" drivers, like from the door kit, will fit in there with adapter rings I have made. I am investigating new grills for the 89+ cars, but its a large commitment in cost, and not sure its something I can do at this time.

The drivers will fit the 84-88 square frame grills with an adapter.

Thanks
Hans
