For those who are interested, it looks like the 1" version of the Vifa silk-dome wins by a margain. It performs very well, with an extended performance well beyond 20k, and is also very affordable as compared to several of the other drivers in the test.
Crossover design will begin in earnest using the Vifa NE25VTS-04. Specs can be found here on the Tymphany site if you want to take a peek:

I have ordered a set of small monitor cabinets, and will install my custom 4" drivers and the Vifa NE25 this weekend, to get some seat time with the combination out of the car.
Thanks
Hans

Good... I hope. We finally got everything up and running in Dan's car, but didnt have any CD's handy to do any critical evaluations. Rob had some unrelated issues which kept from demoing his car...
I am hoping to speak with Dan later in the week and get some feedback from him.
I did receive the bulk of the 4" drivers and grills on monday. I still am owed one carton of 4" drivers and grills, as well as all the tweeter grills. They were supposed to be in this shipment, but there was some kind of mixup.
I am still tweaking the crossovers, but drivers are here and available. So pre-ordering will commence sometime soon.
There will be both active and passive versions of the crossover. I really like the active, and the net increase in cost isnt very much over the passive version... but it does require using more channels of amplification. I am in the process of making a custom housing to hold the electronics for the active crossover. Once I have that done, I will be able to announce pricing for the active version of the kit. Pricing for the passive version will follow shortly.
There will be two versions of the passive kit. One with crossovers designed to be mounted in the doors using the stock harness in a black plastic project box, and another with an attractive case designed for custom installations.
The "black box" passives and active versions will be available first followed shortly by the "competition" passives.
Both the active and "competition" passive versions will require running new wire through the door looms and back to the rear of the car. While not the most pleasant procedure, I can say it is easily doable in a reasonably short period of time. We chased new wire through Dan's car, from the doors back to the spare tire area, as well as installing speakers and a Sharkwoofer (in a completely non ideal environment) during the 928 Int'l visit portion of Sharktoberfest. I would estimate it to be a 2 hour job to run new wire in the comfort of your own garage.
More to come.
Thanks
Hans

The 6.5" are still in development. I am still hoping to have them done this year, but I want to make them perfect, as they are about 50% more than the 4" drivers. No point in having a relatively expensive driver that doesn't perform at the top of its class.

Thx Hans!
Always good to see the product, even better to hear it. Should have pretty good exposure at the Event!
BTW, Sean was over yesterday and I got a chance to actually see the sharkwoofer in person.
Man that thing is nice!!!

Chuck,
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you like the Sharkwoofer. I am very pleased with how it has turned out.. and the speakers should be even better.

Sorry guys. Been busy with all the other projects, work, and still trying to have some fun and make it out to the regional events.
As I am sure I have posted, the grills and drivers are all in stock here in Indy. Crossovers have been modeled electrically, and are now going into the component selection phase. That should be done pretty quickly. I normally wouldnt post this, but for lack of better updates, the curves for the crossover are posted for your review. This also proves that there is some progress taking place behind the scenes You will notice that this graph is 100% unsmoothed, if you are looking at other peoples graphs and thinking how good they look compared to this... trust me, they have been "airbrushed" with a smoothing and correction filter (think correction factor on a dyno, you can get any numbers you want by modifying the correction factor, its analogous to the smoothing filter). Also note the scale, the big peaks and dips are right about +/-2db which will be inaudible difference for most. There is one large peak which has not been corrected centered around 800hz. I do not believe that we will be addressing this, as it will require several components, and again, it really wont be audible. All the really nasty stuff has been trapped and filter out in the slopes of the crossovers. When a bit of a smoothing filter is applied (just enough to make it a bit easier to read) this will look darn near flat all the way from 200hz to 20khz. Lower end roll-off starts around 150hz, and it would have been nice if this number was a bit lower, but given the constraint of the size of the motor used to make it fit in the stock door, I am happy with this number.
To make sure people know what they are looking at - the magenta line is the summed response of both drivers after passing through the crossover. The blue is the response of the woofer after the crossover, green is the tweeter... for the sake of simplicity, just disregard the gold curves.
With a Sharkwoofer system with a subsonic filter set around 20-25hz and a low pass set around 120-135hz I think that it will be absolutely possible to get away with a 5-speaker system in the 928, and have much better performance than the factory system when it was new.
Of course, I am continuing to develop the 6.5" speakers, but I really think that many people will be happy with upgraded doors and the sub, and it really would represent a fantastic value.
Thanks
Hans
