Upcoming Roadtrip...Advice?
Me and two of my friends are taking my 89' S4 from S.F. to L.A. next week for the L.A. auto show....pretty stoked, as it's undoubtedly going to be a great roadtrip.. I know what you're thinking- three guys in their 20s for five hours each way sounds like claustrophobia, but we're all auto design students, so we will take the nostalgia of the 928 over my wife's more comfortable 3 series anyday...
I just got new tires, changed the oil about 1000 miles ago, new air filter, TB check...she's ready to go...I was just wondering since Im going to be running the engine at steady highway speeds through several tanks of gas if there's any fuel system cleaner or similar dietary supplements I can give the old girl during her marathon...I ask because for the most part she only gets out once or twice a week, and it's never for more than 60-100 mile joyrides so this is a good opportunity for this sort of thing....

I have driven my 1990 S4 on a 1,000 km trips, 9 odd hours of driving, numerous times with no hassels at all. Just check that the all fluids are at the correct levels and go.
Remember on long trips the car will be performing at optum temperature and on cruise control, so just enjoy the drive, that what the cars were made for.

It will not be comfortable FOR SURE! I'd take the 3 for the room. We had to jam 4 adults in a 928 for a 2.5 hour trip...OUCH! Not a good time...FOR ANY OF US!

One bottle of Techron couldn't hurt, but I wouldn't do anything more than that. The car will probably be in better overall shape at the end of the 1000 miles. They are not happy sitting.
Take 101 and/or Highway 1 unless one of your passengers gets motion sick in cars!

adding fuel cleaner might not be a bad idea , but note that fuel cleaner works better on short drives as it gets a chance to soak in otherwise the engine just runs it through without much time for the cleaner to work the intake valves should be clean though.
I would put the lightest person in the back, just for a reference read the owners manual for loading specs, it has been seen where overloading has caused the rear shocks to blow due to full stroke events, this would usually happen from hitting a big bump and the car fully laden

We will definitely do a staggered seating setup...we did a trial run the other day, the passenger footwell and dash are pretty deep, so with the passenger seat up about halfway, and the rear sunvisor down, the smallest of the three can fit back there relatively comfortably....I've had two petite girls in the back before and that was another story, theres just not enough room to push the driver's seat up and still drive with how much space the pod takes up

I'll add some techron or equivalent cleaner about halfway through.....I know the car is going to love it, even with the weight, which by the way shouldn't be over 550lbs total....Im strictly limiting carry-on luggage

I take mine on 1000 mile trips with nothing more than checking the coolant, oil and filling her up.

BTW Greg it was good meeting you at 3rd Coast! Wish I had made it for more of the weekend so I really could have visited with everyone!

Forgot to mention tire pressure. Always check before and during stops of a really long road trip.
+1 on it being good for the car. These cars just love to be driven on the highway for hours at a time.
For the backseat passenger though... not so much.

I don't know about the back seat. When I lived in San Diego in the 90's we drove around all the time with three of us. Me, 6' tall, my buddy 6-2' and his girlfriend 6'. She never complained about the back seat. You've seen her in the news lately, her husband, Tony Curtis, just passed away. Now that's a long story how she ended up with him.
