These ok?

Boots on spider
Bigger vac hoses in base of throttle body
Looping back to power brake assist unit

I guess you verified timing-- plug 1 out, harmonic balancer to O/T, cam gear notches align, Straw inserted into plug1 shows piston is up all the way? Rotor then facing just about forward. Plug 1 distrib pickup near the rotor?

I am on this list to learn more about the 928 and search for one. This thread certainly leaves me wondering about the sanity of my plans.

I am fascinated about the focus on all the electrics when the problem seems to be not enough fuel. Could the problem be as simple as a clogged filter or bad pump?

I read that both had been replaced, but it is not unheard of to get a bad pump right out of the box. You report that there is pressure, but could it be possible that once there is flow the pump can not deliver?

Its a definite possibility.
Flow needs to be measured.
Injector screens, too, may be completely clogged and system just recircs fuel to tank
There is a check valve that could be dirty and jammed mostly closed at pump.

The reason lots of these cars are so well preserved is from sitting.
They sat because they were so freakin complicated and expensive to fix, people parked them.
Our mission is to wake them up.

Once we retire from ownership, we move to working 10,000 piece jigsaw puzzles in front of the fireplace.

boots on the spider are in good shape I check them by spraying carb cleaner on them when the car was running and no increase in engine speed.

the vacuum line out to the booster is good.

I am thinking it is the ignition control unit that is not telling the l-jetronic that it is ok to fire the injectors after the car starts or the distributor is not generating the signal to the ICU via the green wire.

just guessing at this point but the logic flows for me.

Yes these cars are not for people that don't like a challenge

Well got some wrench time last night and it is not the ecu or the resistors.

I reverified I am still getting fuel to the fuel rails.

I found an interesting troubleshooting guide in sharkskins garage. I went through the test and it appears I may have a distributor that is not generating the signal to the green wire.

I am going to try some tests today.

I am going to have some start the car while I monitor the noid light and see if it continues to flash or dies at the same time as the car which if dies I think proves out the distributor is not sending the signal if does not I have some other fuel delivery problem in which case I will start by measuring the volume of flow have to do a search to find that one.

I can't help but feel I am close.

It has been a good learning expierence for me I feel confident in working on the cars now all I have to do is figure out mine.

I fixed it after all this time stick-to-it-ness paid off for me.

I am still a little baffled as to the fix.

I sent out the injectors to WitchHunter performance. I figured they were due for a good cleaning anyways. Six of the eight injectors they could not even do a pre cleaning test on they were stuck. They did their magic and revieved all eight injectors.

I reinstalled them this am with all new fuel lines everywhere. The fuel lines were in bad shape I cannot believe I did not have a car-b-que. Jumpered the fuel pump to check for leaks good to go, buttoned everything up, cranked it over and viola.

Car is running great.

What throws me is the nature of the failure it was running fine one night, and then the next morning no start. It would seem that it would be more of a running rough on a few cylinders first then dead cylinders not such a binary true false black white kind of failure.

So to validate the fix was just the injectors I reinstalled the original L-jetronic ECU, Spark control unit, and coil. Yup still runs so it was gummed up injectors.

The only thing that makes sense to me is there was some gunk in one of the fuel lines that broke loose and was enough to jam up all of the injectors at once.

SO now it is off to the tire store and plate and insurance.

Next big hurtle is emmisions testing. I am thinking it should not be a problem after new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and intake refresh.

I plan I running a couple of tanks of gas through the car before the test.

Although it was a painful, frustrating and expensive process it was a great way to learn the car I feel very comfortable working on the car now.

Next projects

steering rack leaking, tie rods ends, and ball joints

After that

TB, and tensioners/rollers (belt is in good visual shape but I have no idea how old it is).

After that

new shocks all the way round.

Thanks for all the help everyone especially Landseer and MrMerlin.

File this one away for future reference. I encountered an early car that would run for a few seconds then die. Also, it would run as long as I sprayed starting fluid down the intake. So, I knew the main injectors were not firing. Did not think to have the injectors cleaned. I need to call that guy back now.

Congrats!
