I had a large enough vacuum leak on my '83 928 that it wouldn't start. It was an A/T. On that model there were large caps on the side of the throttle body, one of the caps came off. On the manual shift models there is are two short hoses that connects to a vacuum limiter.
If there is a leak from the throttle body it won't start.

Tried some more troubleshooting steps with the expert help of Stan. Phone support for the 928 I like it.
Still no start.
I ran out of time, a big championship football game for my son unfortunatly they lost they could not catch a break.
I could not find my meter so I could not test sensors. Stan said he would not out me, but I could not handle the shame and had to out myself.
Stan I will get a new meter test the temp II sensor and will test the fuel injection and ignition relays per your instruction.
I will also go through and clean the fuse panel with an eraser.
I will update you when I get those steps completed.

Latest update:
Ignition relay tests good.
Received new fuel injection relay no luck.
Temp II sensor 2.99 ohms (found my meter).
Will go through the fuse panel tomorrow.
Ohhhh the frustration.
what does not kill us makes us stronger, if that is true I am going to be Hercules by the end of the week ;~)

Thermo / time switch will also take them down, that is, in cold weather prevent starting. Happened to me on 2 84's.
More about thermo/time: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...testing-2.html (Read also the link embedded at post #20 (go to post 40 within THAT link for a diagram showing the location of the thermo-time unit) ). This thermo/time sensor in particular is a problem when it goes bad for cold starting the 84 car. Note that somewhere in the link its pointed out that the WSM test values are wrong. Just replace.
I found the diagram ref, FWIW:

Chris can you post a picture of a 82 Ce panel for a 5 speed?
I need to figure out where the jumper goes for the 5 speed relay socket, Thanks Stan

A bit of research going on for that request.
To begin,
Here is the references, both diagrams from 1982 service tech info.
"up til now" ie. 1981 --- followed by... next page which is the 1982 diagram very interesting, its in the harness, not panel for 82!

Remember, too, low voltage causes havoc with the relays on these cars.
That's why its so instructional to jumper the relays (per WSM).
New relays won't work, either, if voltage is a little low to them.
Low voltage can occur locally within the panel due to partial wire melts behind it that partially drain voltage for one or more relays or corrosion that does the same, regionally in the car due to starter switch or hot post corrosion, or overall due to ground strap partial / intermittent failure under load. May not be your problem, but you haven't ruled it out yet.
Dealer parts guy of mine said, too, that thermal time switch was notorious for failing and he sold a lot of them "back in the day".

Thanks again guys I have more things to check tonight. I guess this is the best way to figure the car out, by digging into it.
I will pull out the CE panel and check it, and clean it.
I will also run the test on the thermo time switch at this point my money is on the thermo time switch.

Don't be surprised if the real root cause doesn't reveal itself explicitly, but does indeed get fixed by your work.
To take the time to isolate the cause / effect of every single fixit manuever would drive a person crazy.

Thanks Chris, now Tom get to work , it might be a good idea to order a new temp sensor, that way you will either have a spare or your old one is toast

While cleaning the CE panel and the grounds I recommend removing the covers from the various relays.....these 2 came out of a car that had no apparent water leakage issues, the CE panel was pretty decent, no corrosion in the connectors and the like. The covers can be removed from most, if not all, the relays, and re-installed and used. Hard to believe the intensive washers and the intermittant wiper controls didn't work? What was really amazing is all the rest of the relays were fine....

I had a relay that was filled with rusty orange water in my 88, it was nasty and there were only a few relays with corroded pins,

Well I got some wrench time tonight.
I tested the thermo time sensor and it is way out of spec so I order one.
Now it is back to the waiting on parts game.
Hopefully but not going to get too crazy thinking I found the issue.

ok after an absence for work related travel and illness.
I installed the thermo time sensor and I am half a step ahead now.
The car starts at the turn of the key runs for 2-3 seconds and dies. Which it was not doing previously so I figure that it was a part that was definitly bad.
I am wondering if there is a way to vacuum test the fuel pressure regulator? If I pull off the vacumm line and smell it I get a very faint smell of gas but it is not wet or anything.
I have not had a chance to go through the fuse panel yet but plan on hitting that in a few minutes.
So anybody got any suggestions for me to try?
