Default What's the Chance?

So in 1986 I bought a new 911 Carrera, red Targa at Towson P/A in Baltimore. Only new Porsche I ever bought. In 2002, while living in New Orleans, I sold it to an aquaintence of my brother who lived in Hilton Head, SC. Shed a tear as she drove off. Couple of years later, heard that the owner sold it off in NY due to a lack of money. So I watch the Panorama and Excellence just to see if she ever shows up. Never saw anything.

So, anyway, last night I go down to Bert Smith Porsche in St. Pete, Fla to a Suncoast PCA GTG and am walking thru the parking lot and there is a car that looks just like my old 911. My wife and I go over and start looking at it and the similarity to the old one is striking. Then my wife recalls that one day back in the 90's when she was washing the car, the wash mitt caught the 'carrera' script on the engine lid and broke off a part of the 'C'. She super glued it back in place. Sure enough, upon examination, there was the barely noticeable break in the 'C'. This was my old car.

What's next, watch out for an old girl friend to pass me on the streets?

Perhaps the car is trying to find you?

Great story!

Great story!

Weird things definitely happen. You going to buy it back?

As much as the coincidence implies that a re-purchase would be in order, I already have the most beautiful car I've ever owned sitting in the garage and, like wives, there can only be one 'boss' in the house.

Is anyone else concerned that his wife took this long to 'fess up to this crime? How about the fact that he let anyone else wash the car in the first place? WOW.

This car is calling to you no doubt. But most importantly, I'd see a counselor about the lie you've been living with your wife.

What a cool story. I think every car guy has at least one "old love" that they wish they didn't sell. But just like old girlfriends, it's probably best to just remember the good times and leave it in the past. Otherwise you will quickly be reminded of all the not so good times as well.

Big Easy, I hope to see you and your pristine "Boss" at the Old Town meet in Nov.

Just hope that when the old flame comes across your path that your wife isn't there to do a close inspection!

Nothing wrong with asking if you can take an old love for a test drive, you never know the wife might want to ride along too.

The Chance is that just about every early Carrera has had the corner broken off the "C" by a wash mitt...

I suspect that I would have left a card in that car with a note that I was the original owner. For many of these cars, the history of ownership is erased after a sale through any commercial operation. For enthusiast owners re-establishing the ownership trail adds to the value and lore that make a particular car special.

Darn! I thought sure that this story was going to end something like this:

"Then I looked around and saw a guy over in the shade of a tree writing something on a piece of cardboard. I went over and asked if that was his car and he said it was. I saw that he had written on his sign 'Must Sell--CHEAP' and he said that he had fallen upon hard times and had to have some money pretty quick so he was selling the Porsche. I took him inside and bought him a drink and after a little negotiation I had my wife write him a check out of her household account which was the only checkbook we had with us."

I told my story to the service Manager at Bert Smith Porsche. The 911 Carrera was in there for service. I left my card and we'll see if the owner calls. As far as the 'C' corner being broken off.... there was also the tiny scratch just behind the driver's door handle, then there was the black stone guards that were not stock that I put on, then there was the slightly indented rain gutter on the targa top (from a dropping incident). This is my old car.
On top of that, just to make this a totally weird night, while I'm telling the service manager my story of the car, I mentioned that I bought the car during my years of going to sea on merchant ships and he said that he had a father, brother and cousin go to the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point.... I graduated from there in '72.
Small world is an understatement.
