Burning Brakes
I drove up to Rhode Island on Tuesday and Maine yesterday and got a lot of positive reactions to the 928 while driving.
A guy on in a minivan honked and gave a thumbs up just after I crossed the Tappen Zee bridge. Two different sets of people did double takes walking by the car in Newport, RI. A gas attendent enthusiastically asked me "how many ponies does this badboy have?" and the desk clerk at my hotel started asking about the car when I checked in last night.
It seems more people notice the car as it gets older and there's less of them around.

Most of today’s cars are enormous, tall, hulking appliances. Their Fischer-Price styling has all the sex-appeal of a refrigerator. It’s hard to believe that at one time the 928 was considered too big and heavy for a sports car, because compared to today’s offerings it seems positively tiny and lightweight.
And you know what's amazing... in 15 years that Panamera will look blocky & dated and ugly and the 928 will STILL have those perfect lines and will look absolutely timeless.
That's actually the thing that amazes me about the Shark... remember, I don't own one yet, but I've dreamed about this car since I was a teenager. I'm in my 30's now... and I remember thinking when I saw a '78 Porsche 928 how amazingly modern it looked back in 90's. The new 1987-> model must be the most timeless car design ever created. It doesn't get old at all... no, it's not just you because you're a fanboy... it really doesn't.
My wife's reaction proved it... complete car ignoramus (read my previous post)... she thought the silver 928 that I showed her was brand new. It was this photo actually (cheers again to the pic & car owner)...!!
While I like the 911, I never understood the huge mainstream attraction. Someone probably takes offense now what I'm going to say about it... I admit it's an amazing classic and a legendary car... it's WAY more famous car than its big brother... it's not that... but it's very mundane too... it's every Bubba and Luke's dream car... it screams "please notice me, I'm a small guy with big engine... and it doesn't take anything away from the car... just some people who want it... not the Porsche enthusiasts, but the posers... I don't think it's cool to dig U2 and Madonna... I prefer Rush and Grateful Dead... you know what I mean?
I don't know if anything above made any sense... I drank a few beers, so please excuse me...

By-Tor, that is a picture that I took...thank you for the kind words. You are quite correct as well... The PanAm will eventually look dated but the 928 (and GTS's in particular) will ALWAYS LOOK RIGHT! (I just had a rita so forgive me as well! LOL!)

An S4 with rear wing and rear wiper delete is just the best looking car ever.
Even with an unlimited budget there is not another car that I would prefer.
The only improvement I can think of is that the wipers should park below
the hood line.
Outside the local Porsche main dealers I have noticed that no matter what
rear engined exotica is on display it only takes a few minutes for the 928
to draw a crowd as if by gravity.

US laws now permit aerodynamic headlamps, relative to which hidden headlamps represent added cost, weight, and complexity as well as reliability concerns as cars age. Internationalized ECE auto safety regulations have also recently incorporated pedestrian-protection provisions restricting protuberances from car bodies, making it more difficult and expensive to design compliant pop-up headlamps.
The last time pop-up headlamps appeared on a volume-production car was in 2004 when both the Lotus Esprit and C5 Corvette ended production.

I drive mine daily and alot. I don't think a day goes by that someone doesn't make some gesture or just plain talk my ear off at a station. People really do react to the lines of this car and with headers and no cat with dynomax race bullits alot of people just love the sound........... Or they just want to shoot me!

I'm in an exotic-rich area where many brand new Porsche owners wouldn't know a 928 if it hit them in a parking lot. And they really don't care what it is, where it came from and what makes it tick. The 928 has no status in their world because it isn't immediately recognizable the way a 911 or Ferrari is.
But there are the other guys around here who are car enthusiasts. These guys give my car a nice long, approving look and are ready to chat about cool cars in general.
Not that I need approval or validation of what I drive, but it's nice when someone appreciates a 928 for what it is, and not what it stands for. It's also cool when your 13 year old daughter's friend who has Abercrombe, Facebook, iTouches and shopping on her mind, slows as she walks past in the driveway to take in the lines of the GT and says "I really like your car!"
By-Tor, for being a not-yet owner of a 928, you seem to be pretty passionate about the 928, and your insight about these cars is pretty vast for someone who doesn't yet have one. I predict that we'll be seeing more of you around here. Hell, it sounds like your wife has given you about as green a light as you'll get from her when it comes to her endorsing a new toy (I have one of those too)

I don't think the pop-up headlites date the car at all. My Pantera has them too, only you can't see them when they are down on the Pantera.
I get a lot of looks with both cars. Most people can't believe the age of either one. I do drive the 928 more than the Pantera.

I guess it's only a matter of time when I own one. I'm from a small Scandinavian country and unfortunately we don't have many Sharks for sale, and the car tax is incredible, even when you import the car from another EU country. If you buy a good one for $15K € from Germany (that's what the good ones cost there... yeah that's over $20K USD), you have to pay $3-$5K extra for taxes (depending on the mileage) and other expenses.
You don't know how lucky you guys are with your car & gas prices. You have no idea.
