Replacing wheel stud, 88 S4..

I have 3 studs that need replacing on inspection.

I did some searching, but likely missed the details, and am not home to look in the WSW.

Is there an access to knock out and insert new wheel studs front and rear, without removing lots of stuff..like on my godd*** Rx8?

Love the 8, but...decades of engineering, and someone forgets a detent to replace a rear stud in less than 2hrs of work? #fail

I've popped out studs on my front wheels in seconds with an air hammer without even having to remove the brake rotor. IIRC, the rears are not so easy.

Front hubs are relatively easy, pop the caliper and rotor, the dust cap, undo the spindle locknut (6mm hex), and pull the hub. Press out/in studs.

EDIT: Or you can do what Ed says. Dunno whether that's hard on the wheel bearing or not. Maybe tighten the locknut so the forces are evenly distributed on the race, hammer out the stud, then reset the locknut to finger-tight?

The rear, AFAIK the hub's gotta come out. Which means caliper, rotor, axle shaft, e-brake assembly, hub, a new rear wheel bearing. A real PITA. Hopefully I'm wrong and it can be done without all this.

If I'm right, Dr. Bob owns a Sir Tools B90 hub puller tool, which may still be in NorCal with Bill Ball (not sure of its whereabouts..) You might be able to rent it from Bob.

One thread of several or rear wheel bearings:
