When I brought the '88 back from Cali, the previous owner wanted me to leave the tags. I did and went down to Cali DMV and got a transit permit. Cost about $15 and no waiting in line. Drove all the way back without tags until I got to Sweetwater, Texas and a LEO pulled me over for excessive speed (what is that exactly?) and asked if I knew that I had no tags. I told him I knew. He asked whose car it was, and I told him I had just bought it. I told him I had a transit permit and pointed to the pemit in the windshield. He said oh, okay. and told me to keep my speed down and be careful. And I was off again with no ticket.
