Cheap exhaust repair

My car didn't pass the yearly mandatory checkup from the government. The exhaust had three rusty holes in it! It was already repaired in the past with a plate welded on it. There was one hole in the middle of that plate. A second one on the side of that plate were the weld points were. And a third on next to the pipes exiting at the back.

So I looked up what a new exhaust would cost and the best thing I could find was 300 euro at ebay for non-brand, 2nd hand for 150 and a complete one for about 700 2nd hand. Problem was, the pipes were welded together so I might have to saw through some pipes and hopefully connect a new part to them. Anyway, I was really motivated to get it welded by the shop instead :)

So I went to the local garage and the first thing the mechanic said was that the exhaust was rotten. Too rusty and thin to repair anymore. So I started to explain how crazy expensive these 928 exhausts are and after looking at it a bit more he eventually said that it might work after all! So, after welding a whole lot more plates on it, and only 70 euro's, here's the result :)

Living in England, I have plenty of experience repairing exhausts. My favourite trick for a hole in a pipe was an aluminium can (the kind beans come in) and two jubilee clips.

Generally, though, I found there are two choices when your exhaust is rusting away :

1) Buy a new exhaust
2) Spend a stack on patches, exhaust bandages, paste that sets at high temperature, and all the other "fixes" sold in high street stores, THEN buy a new exhaust! The problem is that when one bit rusts out, the rest of the system is not far behind.

when it goes again try going to the pipe shop and have them make you up a short piece of pipe that takes the place of that muffler will prolly cost you less than repairing that muffler your car will sound alittle more rumbly when i did it to mine i thohgt the sound was actually better than stock

Well, I'm happy with the fix. It's a costly hobby and I love everything that keeps the porsche prices away.

me too, just scrapped a perfectly good system, looks like it was stainless steel, had an ANSA final muffler on it, muffler weighed a ton....just getting in the way and no local interest...and it makes no sense to ship them these days, at least used ones...

Holy $hit, is that fibregalss? "It's a bute Clark!" :)

got to love that great aroma coming off the fiberglass as the heat starts to warm it up lol good thing your upwind of it lol

I would ditch that pumpkin muffler and have a custom RMB put on, that repair will not hold up.

It's not fiberglass :) It's been welded underneath and that's some kind of welding paste to prevent water to get between the plate and the muffler. I'm happy it's on it because the previous plate got a hole exactly on the welding crack.

But cmon, nobody can see the beauty of a low cost fix? Is it because I'm dutch? Everything about Porsche is great except the pricetags! You guys are all perfectionists :)

Perfectionist?? I take that as an insult :) Anyone that saw my car knows I'm far from it. :) Paint it flat black and it will improve the look ten fold. :)

That was but, 2 POs before me did it, however the engine looked like it came out of a time capsule and mechanically it was perfect too.
