Does the clutch slip when the car has stood for a while? Check for oil on the clutch.

As your oilpan is dry it could be oil from the rear cam cover seals dripping down the rear of the engine or from the filler neck leaking into the V then running down the back of the engine.

I just looked at your original photos again. A little leaked oil goes a very long way when spread out over the underneath of the car by the wind. My SE leaks oil from the pan gasket (and other places) and makes the same mess as your pics. It doesn't leak enough to measure on the dipstick. (0.5-0.7L per 1000 miles if driven hard - 0.0 L per 100o miles if driven gently)

Could all that oil that you see , be from before you fixed the pan leak ?? Could the oil on dexceleration / high engine vacum , be comming through the engine ? Is this oil issue a track only problem ? Terry

I was asking about the front main seal possibly leaking because I was trying to figure how you were getting lots of oil on deceleration- perhaps it is leaking out of the front main seal. On the other hand, if you had an oil pan leak, you might get oil leaking on the front 'shelf' of the oil pan, which then slides off en masse under deceleration and gets laid down on the track, making you popular with your friends.

Before the pan gasket re-do, did the front of the oil pan look like this? (This was my GT the day I bought it...)

Alternatively, you may have a leaking RMS. You can see the oil just leaks down the rear face of the block, seeps out from under the bellhousing cover, collects on the bolt heads, and (and when the car's moving) gets blown back all over your transmission

Right now I´m confused! I will take a good look up front again but when I did that one week ago before I´d put back the belly pan there was no oil whatsoever in the area round the oilpan or the lower bellhouse. Right now the car are on high jackstands in the back with the crossmember down so I cant get under the car to remove the bellypan but I´ll try to losen it at the back.

Beginning to think this is not the car for the Nordschleife this time so I´m considering other means of transport and racing......

Did you change the oil pan gasket yourself? I presume the oilpan and the engine crossmember were an oily mess. All the oil on the tranny could have come from the engine before the pan gasket R&R

Yes I changed it myself and it was really messy on the crossmember and oilpan.

The oil at the tranny is most definitely fresh. After the visit to the track last week it was dripping all over the place and it had come through the boltholes from where the safetybelts in the backseat were bolted and I had two poddles(?) in the back.

They do check and ban leaky cars at the ring.

I would put in new top cover, clean up all accessable oil and see if it cures it.

Well, yesterday I gave up the plan to drive my car to the ring! Felt that the time left was not enough, and that I didn´t wanna gamble and maybe not get a chance to drive.

What to do then?

Why don´t buy yet another Porsche and yesterday I invested in this:

944 S2 -90 in real good condition with the right options for a nice day at the track.

And of course I will be riding the 928 on the ring in the future, just not this time. Next week I will continue searching for the real problem with my car and I hope you guys will continue helping me along the way.

Thanks for your support.

You'll get there. Just be patient, fix that leak and keep track of oil pressure while driving at the ring. This was taken little over week ago.

Congrats on the purchase.. should be great fun! Of course, you may want to boost the S2 after you return, so you can take it back with even more power

For your oil leak.. I'd suspect the rear main seal.. its hiding behind the flywheel. Here's a shot of one that's been leaking for a while (my '89).

Interesting- why is the leak worse at the top? Crank comes to rest as the oil pressure bleeds down and the seal is most 'open' at the top? Or is the leak at the bottom and the continuous flow 'cleans' the lower lip of the seal? Or ???

Rob, this pic is taken lookup "up" - you can see the hole in the bell housing.

The cleaner area towards the camera is "down", and has presumably been cleaned by the flow of oil.

The RMS is the first place I´ll look then when I continue. It´will be real interesting to see how that much oil can come out in the back with no sign of it in the front.

OT: After I taken the S2 to the ring I´ll hand it over to my wife. So no boost yet. Have changed the brakefluid, pads and put on a nice set of 19 inch wheels to use if its raining. Otherwise it will be Michelin PS CUP.
