Just curious what people think is the better value - or just personal preference - if they were buying - the 88 5 speed with about 20K or the 93 GTS 5 speed with about 120K? Both are similar in asking price.

The 88 seems a little high, the 93 seems a little worn.
Love the 93 color.
Very low miles / Capt Earl review: I'd be going for the 88 and discussing price.

Do you want a garage queen or a driver? The 88 is a beautiful car, but it will lose value rapidly if you put miles on it.
I don't consider GTS's, in general, to be good values, but 130K miles is nothing to a 928 that has been well maintained.

Value is just the wrong way to select a 928, you need to know what you want, and get that.
Personally I don't think I am a good match for a low mileage car, I want to drive it, maybe track it, and I don't have room for a garage queen. Buy either of those cars and a prerequisite question should be, how will you feel about the, first parking lot clunk, first dent, first fender bender, and how that might limit what you do with it.
Buy a nice enough car and you won't be willing to drive it, seems like a twisted goal to me, but its not my boat you need to float.

GTS EVERYDAY and TWICE ON SUNDAY'S!!! There is NO CONTEST AT ALL! Last and best of the breed or a SUPER nice car that will lose value fast with every mile driven and still lose value even if it sits...take the GTS and drive the crap out of it! Just like Ferry Porsche meant it to me!

I looked at or drove at least 12 different 86.5, 87, 88, 89, 90 & 91. Wasn't able to afford 93-95 and never saw one even close (well except for Bigs car but that was still above my budget). Many on this board were kind enough to be eyes for me in other cities.
I saw 4 928's in one weekend and 6 in 3 weeks!
In the end I almost pulled the trigger on 2 86.5's, 2 88's and 1 89's before finding the '89 I ended up buying.
One key for me was color and that my wife didn't like burgundy interiors. She was okay with blue but absolutely loved the cashmere interior and I loved the white in the car I that I finally ended up buying.
For me it was a combination of colors, motor and transmission combined with my budget and what I was willing to spend (in time, money, tax and transport) to get it set up right and get it to my home.
Unless you're planning to redo the interior and repaint the car, or create a collection as many here have, you're going to be living with the car as it looks (for some that's not important-for me it is). The visceral experience of driving for me is that the interior is functional, clean and easy. I am looking for a GT to cruise and occasionally track at DE & Autocross events.
I also went for an 89 because i can put a booster seat in for my son in the rear.
You have to decide if you care about the value rising or not.
You have to decide if you are willing to invest time or money to get it up to snuff or if you want a turn-key car.
I know I'll never get more money than I end up putting into the car but at the end of the day I'll get far more out of it than money can ever buy. I don't plan on making it a daily driver (for now-maybe in the future) but I also plan on driving it every weekend and on trips up to Lime Rock, to 928 events and so on.
Good luck with your search!

GTS.
When you get the modifying itch, wider rear fenders and stronger gearbox are worth it
Plus you can fit better cams to a GTS and make even mo' powah.

I'd go with the GTS. As mentioned previously, putting more miles on it won't impact the value much. That, and it's the ultimate 928, IMO.
