"car needs c/v joints"
My last visit to my mechanic he told me my '87 S4 needs new c/v joints. Parts and labor quote was close to $400. Has anyone done this work DIY? Tools needed, degree of difficulty?
Any input would be appreciated.

If its the rear boots that need replacing then the kit is cheap....less that $50 if I remember right. The rear axels need to come off and repack the joint with new grease. The rear hub nut is on with like 310 FT/LB which is more than most home use torque wrenches will do. Its not a bad job really. Depends on how hard $400 is to come by. Its hard for me so I did mine myself. I borrowed a wrench to torque mine.

Not a tough job, just dirty. Mineral spirits in a squirt bottle, and a big plastic storage tub make the job much easier.
Half the job is cleaning all the old grease out of the joints and repacking. There was talk on here about not using the allen head bolts again as they stretch and wont torque up correctly.
If you have the tools and an afternoon, not terribly difficult. Dwayne has a good writeup on his page to guide you.
