I'm sorry MrMerlin, but where do you see the crank drive gear? All I can see in my photos is the oil pump gear and the shroud? Are the thrust washers supposed to be visible from this angle? I was pretty certain I saw them from underneath (when I check out the crank gear), but I may have mistaken something else for them.

The guide washers are on the front and back of the crank gear, not the oil gear.

DOH i am sorry i am not viewing what i thought i was viewing..
I thought the picture you posted was the crank drive gear it is in fact an oil pump pulley, a well worn pulley.
If the oil pump gear looks like this you can figure the crank drive gear wont be far behind, even though the crank gear is steel it can still look like that.
Anyway on the oilpump if you have an aluminum gear then you replace it with a steel gear you would remove the 1mm spacer thats behind the pulley.
