the fun is allready over,,grinding noise :(
my first gastank isnt ampty yet and,,,
grinding sound comming from front of the engine. first i was thinking it would be the ventilator bearing, but its the waterpump.
i can hear the sound better with a plastic tube , its comming from inside the waterhose.
it started yesterday with intervals, and today it already sounds worse and more often.
a timing belt replace needs to be done, and waterpump replace.
i have found a workshop link, i hope it is not verry different for my 84,
http://members.rennlist.com/pirtle/tbelt.html
i will do this dirty job myselve,
sad thing is i just have this car , so its all new to me.
the good thing is , its only a service job, its not a cracked engine or worse dammage.
i think the belt isnt changed 6000 km away as told, or the left the pump in place.

As you will have to replace the waterpump, belt and associated rollers
take this as the golden opportunity to fit the improved water pump,
the Porken tensioner and the Gates belt.

Take the accessory drive belts off the front of the engine one at a time and run the engine after each removal. If the sound goes away after removing one of the belts, then the culprit is the item driven by the last belt removed. If the sound remains after all belts except timing are removed, then you have issues with the timing system (water pump, tensioner, guide rollers, etc.)
Hope this helps

I differ a bit and suggest do not run the car at all.
Disassemble to find the issue.
A waterpump failure can include block contact on these cars.
Just take it apart, find and fix.
And an 84 USA TB/WP job is not a particularly difficult job / take your time / post pictures.
Often, the biggest expense is for new, not rebuilt, water pump.

The positive out of this is that you'll know it's right when you're finished instead of relying on what the PO told you had been done.

Yep, agree with Chris and Dave above.
The car's new to you anyway - so its a good time to make sure yourself the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, rollers etc. are all in good condition and replaced where needed.
If after you do that you find no evidence of the pump having failed, and no carving on the block by the water pump impeller, count yourself lucky, and be safe in the knowledge that you now have a new timing belt etc.

What do you mean the fun it over?
The fun has just begun!
Following is a step by step picture procedure for an 87... there is a lot in common.

Here is another good write up - thanks Dwayne - to help you:

As some others said, I would not start the car anymore.
You can try to turn by hand all the accessories pullies once you remove each belt to see if they turn freely.
If it is the water pump, I hope it did not damage the block.
Here is two upgrades you might consider when doing the TB/WP job:

Good luck.

ok, order has been made, new laso pump, belt and rolers, the whole micmac.
its more fun to buy a set nice wheels, but after the job has done i will know i am safe.
the po did not do this , he told me the owner befor him did it, i have his phonenumber, but i didnt call him, i just do it , i dont think i ever sell this car. s4 is to complicated, and i have enough power with this car to have fun.
a few days ago i was driving 120km/h at freeway, road was wet, i floored the gas pedal and the car shifted down and started fishtailing. it scared me,,the power is awsome.

But why would he have a 84 US? Wouldn't his engine be a ROW which is in fact an interference engine?

Bart - TB/WP not a bad job on the 84--much easier and faster than a 32v engine and a great way to get to know your engine. In addition to the great info above, I'd add to your shopping list is a flywheel lock. Or, do you have someone who can loan you one? It's a "must have" when you do this job.

And if the water pump damaged the block, we have a "community" tool that can be used to repair the block.

Bart, someone already said it, but to put it more graphically, you have been kissing and maybe feeling a little bit with your car, now you are going to get to have some down and dirty sex with it. Maybe it is too bad that your relationship has advanced so quickly.
