Harbor Freight 2 ton foldable hoist for $128 (possibly $120)
So, I've been thinking about picking up an engine hoist for a while. I'm a fan of HF for some things (huge fan of their "industrial quality" roller tool chest), but I'm selective about what I purchase there. I decided to pull the trigger on their two ton foldable hoist today. For this weekend, it is on sale from $250 to $160 (or possibly $150). It's listed in their tent sale flyer at $160, but is also currently listed as $150 on the website, which is the same price as the 1 ton version which is also on sale. Combine that with the printable 20% off coupon (http://dealspl.us/imageview.php?f=108017), and the price drops to $128 (or $120).
As for 928 content, someone posted previously that the HF 1 ton hoist didn't have enough clearance for a 928. I hope that this larger version does, as future motor mount, oil pan gasket, and motor pulls for the 928 are the main reason for me picking it up. Mods, I apologize if this belongs in OT. |
Its a screaming deal for the US General 7 drawer service cart, $149 less 20% with that coupon.
I've got the 1 ton, used it for all sorts of stuff, but never taking a 928 engine in or out. Could be removing the hood will help. |
Yeah, so if you want to maximize your HF experience, then you watch to see what sales they offer, wait for the lowest sale, and then use the -20% coupon. Their non-sale prices are a joke, primarily because pretty much any thing in the store is on sale at one point or another. That being said, the 20% coupon is often available. All that being said, Danglerb has a good point. I agree with him, in particular, on the service cart.

The 20% coupon is continuously available here (along with all the current deals):
http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthr...ghlight=harbor Another good thread to follow related to HF: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=27192 Some items appear to never go on sale; most of the sale items repeat themselves frequently. |
Yup, the 20% coupon is usually available; although, sometimes they let it expire and replace it with a 15% coupon. My guess is that the economy has lead to a pretty much continuous 20% off. However, they don't allow you to combine coupons. For as long as I've been watching, I haven't caught this hoist at this price without a specific coupon (in which case you cannot use the 20% off). I'm sure that I've missed this deal before, but I'm pretty sure that they don't ever offer it at a better price than this.

Get the big hoist and a leveler.
If you don't have one, get the matching big, foldable engine stand, too. Don't forget to get the odd bolts that mount the bellhousing in advance. 12mmx1.5mm. There are some appropriate ones in your front suspension but likely not on the shelf at a local store as 1.25 is "fine" and 1.75 is "coarse." |
the 2ton and 1ton have the same berm lenth so I don't think it will work. Can someone confirm? I need to pull two engines and would rather buy the hoist and not have to rent one.

Interesting. When I was in the store the info said they had the same length. I may purchase one then, worse case I'll sell it on craigslist.

^^ That is the same crane I have from HF and it worked fine for pulling my engine. I have had no problems out of mine so far. Think I paid $160 a couple years ago.

Jim,
That's the 1 ton version which apparently isn't big enough for a 928.

I got a 12 ton press and a trans jack from HF for less than $200. Added tremendous capability in my garage.
