Drifting
I did all this 2 days after I brought the car home.
I did not know one site from the other and spent most of my time on the palican site, you know, checking parts, asking questions.
The last 2 weeks has been the most time i have spent on Rennlist. I am enjoying the variety of post, but the past 2 days has been interesting.
I am only here to collect and share knowledge, and it has been knowledgeable.

Dude, get off the fence and join. I used this board for 5 years before joining--and I don't know why. The body of knowledge on this board has easily saved me tens of thousands of dollars in repairs, kept a 2 Porsches on the road, and I’ve met some really great people. It’s like throwing money in the offering plate as it passes by. .

I'm a new member but looked through the list long before I bought my shark. Decided it was a great resource . My first week of joining I had gotten several PMs with detail on my car from members that were also considering it. They did a more detailed inspection than I ever could have with photos. Even though it was after I had bought it the info on options, problems were things I would have had to diagnose.
I also had several local folks with 928s tell me they would help me with projects and tools. Chris, Jim, USA4cheer. Jim Aka Jadz928 came right over and showed me some other things and helped with a project list . He even offered some free parts and help installing .Your mileage may vary, but I don't think it's related to being a member.
I felt it was the right thing to do. why wouldn't anyone want to be a member for $18.00. I even get told to use the search tool read the FAQs etc. I don't take offense. If I do I can tell them to get bent for sod off via PM. Another valuable membership benefit.

Sean makes a good point, new or not everyone should be treated with respect until they lose that priveledge. it actually took me longer to pay and join than deciding to do so. never thought of it as supporting the site, i just knew there were others that knew a lot more than i did about 928s. i don't understand these super users though. all this knowledge is worth more than what you have to pay to join. i feel i should stop there

Of course, the flip side of this is me... I'm neither credible, knowledgeable or helpful
However, I see my ongoing participation as a constant learning experience. Regardless of whether I find what I'm immediately looking for, I usually find *something* useful that I can file away in my little pea brain for later. Of course, I'm always up for regurgitating what [little] knowledge I've picked up so far.

I was on here for some time before I became a member. Just cheap I guess, but I joined because there were restrictions on my posts and what I could view. I'm here for the technical information. Members with lots of posts are recognized as creditable, knowledgable and usually helpful.
There is a lot of disinformation on the internet and some of that disinformation is right here on this forum and the other ones. But that disinformation doesn't come from long time members with a reputation of knowing what they are talking about. Two examples (not to discredit the multitude of listers who know there **** when it comes to 928's): If Wally Plumley and/or Jim Bailey (and there are others) posts something, it's gospel as far as I'm concerned. At the same time there are some that I have to listen to with a grain of salt. In other words verify, verify, verify! I don't need to do that with Wally or Jim.
Someone who is not a member has no reputation with me or this group. It's just human nature to be suspecious of the new guy. Users may be just feeling us out to decide if they want to stay. I've also seen some users that drop in just to stir up some ****. YMMV

"Everything on the iinternet should be free."
"Anything I find on the internet is God's Truth."
"Anything I find on the internet is now Mine."
Myths.
Truth is that it costs money to keep a service like this going. I think I can pretty much guarantee that the first problem avoided, problem solved, question asked and answered, simple or tough, is worth more instantly than the annual membership fee here. Want to graze here? No worries. Getting serious about using the service to gain or enhance the value of your ownership experience? No worries. But there is the Golden Rule, and it applies here as much as it might anywhere. Give as you would like to receive. Pay it forward.
----
I'm as guilty as anybody about suggesting that new users consider membership. I tack it on at the end of a response. User gets their value good or bad, and gets to vote with their wallet about whether they think the caliber of response is worth the few membership dollars. Maybe they need a few more sessions to get a better appreciation. Maybe they need to read a few more MrMerlin, Bill Ball, WallyP, Jim Bailey, etc. posts to get the bad taste cleared after they read mine. I'm selfish after all. The more folks we have supporting the service, the better chance we have of continuing access to it.
So there. Help me support my habit.

It might be time to go back through the "new visitor" post and update some of the technical information.
At least read it yourself before arrogantly directing somebody to it for answers, just to make sure the answer applies.
The ground point diagram, for instance, sucks for 16V cars and isn't complete for 85/86 either.
The whole tone of that thread is off-track in my opinion. Not welcoming. Preachy. Not necessarily accurate.

I think the discrimination is largely dependent on two things:
1. The person doing the discrimination. There are are many of us here that do not even look to see if their question came from a user or a member. I don't. A few others come to mind, MrMerlin, Bill Ball, drbob, SeanR, Rog100, and many others.
2. But the flip side of the coin depends on the person asking the question. If they are being anoying and asking a whole bunch of Q's without heeding the advice already given... well they get flushed. If they didn't bother to read the FAQ, they often times get referred back there.
I try to be helpful when I can, and will gently remind them to read the FAQ or Post a God Damn Picture with their post in the Random Picture Thread!
Oh... sorry.

I really have no issue w/member vs. non-member, but when it comes to weighting a poster's comment or opinion, I will look to their post count.
If they have 7 posts and I look back (find other posts by user) and the first 6 post show low value or disrespect even... I will discount their word. OTOH, If I look back and see signs off value-added or enthusiam, I will continue to look for more interesting posts from this person, in the future.
I don't think one can look at high post count as a sign of a good person per se... but more of a person who's been around and know's the general "in & outs" of the community. They are "wearing the t-shirt" so to speak.
Whereas I see low posters as one who have joined the PCA just for the free mag. Jury's out 'til I see them at a PCA event or meeting.
