Default 928 Road help list revival is a go! Submission E-mail added:928Assist_at_comcast.net

Hey everyone,

Well, as a result of some discussion (hijack) in Greg's Long Drive this weekend thread I wanted to see if anyone wants to put their info on a 928 Road Help list.

I'm afraid the last reference I could find on here was from Greg86andahalf who hasn't been on Rennlist since May of 2009 so I don't know if he's still maintaining it or not.

Here are a few threads from 03 and 04 when he mentions it. I know it was still around until a few years ago because I think I was on it when I first got my car.

928RoadHelp thread 1

928 Road help 2

Anyway, I think it was a valuable resource and I'd like to take a stab at setting it up and maintaining it. Before I set up an e-mail address and start collecting information I want to make sure that a) I'm not stepping on anyone's toes. If someone else is currently maintaining this and I just don't know it please speak up. and 2) I want to make sure I get everything that's important in the beginning so I'm not spending all my time going back and forth for more.

Here's what I think it will need:

EDITED 8/18/2010 with more info and new e-mail address: 928Assist_at_comcast.net
**************************
Name: (real AND RL name) First name is OK
Phone number
Days/Times it's OK to call
The town or general part of the state you live in. This could include town but should at least let someone from outside the area know if they're near you. Southeast Georgia is good, tri-county area of Pennsylvania not so much. If this is not the US, include the region of the country you're located in.

E-mail address is required
Optional:
Is it OK to have your e-mail published on an unsecured website?
Is it OK to have your Phone Number published on an unsecured website?

Are you a mechanic who works on 928s as part of his job? (if so, please add business number and address)
Are you a shade tree mechanic who has a 928?
Can you recommend a 928 mechanic in the area? (if so, please add business number and address)
What facilities are available to you/in the area?
Got a flatbed or can you recommend one?
Can you recommend a hotel in the area?
Do you have tools/garage/manuals?
Liftbars and jackstands?
Spare LH/MAF/Other parts

What year 928 do you have?

**************************
What I'm thinking is that some of these will be fields that just have a checkbox in them and others could be a write-in.

This way if someone is in the area and they hear something weird they can look in the list and see if someone is in the area, but if they're dead on the road and need a tow and somewhere to stay that's a different set of problems. Look down the list and only look at the ones that fit the bill.

So what do you think? Am I missing anything? Is there enough interest in this to try to bring it back? Does anyone know the guy that was handling it before? Is he still around and maybe want to update it?

Let me know.

My problem was that I did not take my lap top with me, and the blackberry web is limited.

I have a copy of the 'old' list but I thought the secret was not to share it with anybody that wasn't on the list since it contained so much 'confidential' contact information. Unless someone here want to take on the challenge of administering this list, maybe this would be a good item to delegated to the newly found enthusiasm of the 928 Owners Club? That could be a great… ‘value add’

I was thinking of doing a link to a downloadable .pdf list or maybe an .xls sheet that could be printed before you go on a trip outside your area.

I remember that too, but unless it includes an address I don't see the reason for any secrecy. I think the idea was that you'd only get a copy if you agreed to help out.

I don't see that as a problem because I'd just send the link to people who sent me their info. If someone else gets it, oh well, it's just a phone number and maybe e-mail address, right?

What if you're not a member of the 928 OC?

The 'old' list included addresses... hence the secrecy. Truth be told I never used the list now even have anyone call, but I still carry a copy in my car just in case. I know I’d go out of my way to help a fellow 928 owner if they called me for help.

That would be a good reason to join... hence the suggestion. Not to be mistaken as a thread highjack if someone else wants to take responsibility for this go for it.

If not, it could be a nicely gift wrapped project for the 929 OC to assume. I could be mistaken, but I believe the 928 OC actually has a larger (or at least different) foot print than this forum, just not as active.

Hi Mike,

I'd be interested in being on any new list. I tried to sign up for the old list a couple months ago, but my email bounced back as undeliverable.

I wouldn't have a problem doing it in conjunction with or for the 928OC.

If you check Andrew's campaign thread he says current membership is about 400, I think there are more lurkers than that here, but I could be wrong.

Either way I'm sure it wouldn't be used much, but even if one or two guys (or gals) a year find themselves using this service it would be great to have it up to date and functioning.

Tom, I'll let you know if I'm going to go for it and we'll see how it works out.

Mike,

Way to take the initiative. I think this could be valuable for anyone driving their 928 in unfamiliar territory. I was on the original list and am content to remain on the list. Although I should update it a bit as I now have a spare set of brains, MAF, relays, tools galore, diagnostic tester, etc.

It would be good to have this hosted on the 928 OC website, but I would make it available to all (i.e. don't have to be a member to vieew it.) Of course, I'm not in a position to offer that yet...

Whatever happens, I'm in. I'm not an OC member (yet!) but I'm always willing to help any motorist in need, regardless of their ride. Bonus points if it's an S4

While I think it is great that the list be included for OC members, I feel that it should not be limited to them only.

The 928OC website has a "den mother" list, that lists the name of the person in each region who can be called upon for some level of 928 assistance. That list needs to be updated, and where possible expanded. I'm on it for SW Montana. If you create a new list, I'd be happy to particiapte on it too.

I just stepped up this weekend to cover Long Island, New York but I've got no tools, lift or experience. But I have a phone, 2 extra beds, some air mattresses and a BBQ and am near 4-5 good shops.

Either way the list should be available to Rennlisters, OC and anywhere else as long as the people who are volunteering agree.

I would like to be part of the list and have the list with me this Saturday.

I'm flying to Detroit and driving home Andrew Olson's (well mine now) Black 87 12 hours to New Jersey.

The original list has a lot of info that I would not be happy sharing with the giant internet information fan club. OTOH, the original list expected reciprocity on info shared, so you get a copy of the list when you offer your info and services. Happy to go with that distribution method again.

Greg's list was updated from time to time, e-mailed to registrants in PDF format, handy to print when you are planning an excursion or mail to your PDA/smartphone. I keep a printed local list in my car, but amazingly, it seems like I'm the only resource in my area. I call my number but it's busy. !!!!

So here goes:

My name is Bob and I'm an addict. I live in Glendale, California, near the intersection of the 2 and 134 freeways, between the 210 and the 5 freeways. I have a garage and some tools, a set of WSM's, and I watched a guy work on a Fiat transmission once so I'm a 928 expert. There's probably no easy way a tow truck would be able to get your car to my garage, but I do know a couple shops within range of your 100-mile AAA service range. I can make roadside service visits. There's a set of very tired rubber on S4 flats if you have tire trouble at an odd hour. You won't drive fast on them but they will get you home. I have a spare .13 rebuilt LH brain that will cover S4-GTS cars. I have some other new and used service parts that might help get you home, plus I usually have fluids here. There are plenty of local hotels in the neighborhoodhere, and there is sometimes a gap in the waiting list for the Lincoln Bedroom if you get stranded here overnight.

All we need is a way to securely share contact info beyond PM's and email forwarding.
