928 Road help list revival is a go! Submission E-mail added:928Assist_at_comcast.net

Dude. That sounds awesome. Can you do all this for free though?
If so, then you and me have got to talk.
I've written some 'great circle' programs that calculate distances between two locations based on the lat and long of the centroid of the zip, but we'd need a lookup from a db and usually you have to pay for that kind of data, don't you?
Everyone else, once we get some details ironed out I'll update this list with a way to submit info so it doesn't have to be on here and we'll see how it goes.
I'm on the fence about the specific application of this and I think we need a consensus.
I think I'd prefer something simple that can be downloaded and printed out, but is not searchable (online) like an .xls or .pdf that would be downloaded without a password. If someone needs it, it's there for them whether they are a member of Rennlist or 928OC or not.
A searchable database would be nice, but I seriously doubt the work involved in writing and maintaining it would be justified by the actual use anyone would get out of it. How often is someone out of their own area and at the mercy of someone else in a strange area? Maybe a few times a year?
I think of this thing as something you would print out before a road trip and then have with you 'in case'. You might even just print out the ones listed for the region you expect to be in.
While the application described would be great, I'm afraid it would exclude too many people (by requiring a log-in) and might not justify the amount of maintenance it would require.
What does everyone think?

From the New Visitor...FAQ thread:
https://rennlist.com/forums/301029-post15.html
Is that still being maintained?

I posted two links and a reference to him in the first post. He apparently hasn't been here in over a year and no one seems to have heard from him in a while.
That's what I was trying to determine. I don't want to step on anyone's toes, I just wanted to volunteer to bring it back up to date if possible.

I think the best format would be a google map with a flag planted at each participant's location. These can be generated from a database, so perhaps the best solution is to do the database as suggested first, making it searchable, then creating the google maps interface on top of it for those that can handle it. Zip code references make sense data-wise, but not for humans. If I'm traveling somewhere it's unlikely I'd know the zip code of the location my alternator went out. But I could find it on a map of my route.

I love the Google map idea. Would it be sufficient to show accurate locations using a zip code only? Or would I have to collect and plot full address data? There are some pretty large zip codes (by area) out there. I'm thinking plotting by zip only on Google maps would be "close enough" to be useful.
I do not have a smart phone, so I'll have to ask: How does Google maps display on a smart phone? Is it useable?

Google has it's own version of Maps for Android, so yes, it's useful. Really depends on the size of the screen. With a GPS chip and the Navigation app, there's really no need for a Garmin-like device. Sell your Garmin stock.

I think in most circumstances plotting by zip would be sufficient. But I'm really not sure what the plotting requirements are by google.

Let's think KISS for the next go-around, and get a working list. Then work on enhancing the shareabilty and realtime search-and-destroy as the next phase.

Please e-mail your info to 928Assist_AT_Comcast.net
OK, let's try this:
If you want to be on the list please paste your responses to these questions in an e-mail to 928Assist_at_comcast.net. I'll see what I can do about getting it all together into a db and then we'll determine the best way to distribute it.
**************************
Name: (real AND RL name) First name is OK
Phone number
Days/Times it's OK to call
The town or general part of the state you live in. This could include town but should at least let someone from outside the area know if they're near you. Southeast Georgia is good, tri-county area of Pennsylvania not so much. If this is not the US, include the region of the country you're located in.
E-mail address is required
Optional:
Is it OK to have your e-mail published on an unsecured website?
Is it OK to have your Phone Number published on an unsecured website?
Are you a mechanic who works on 928s as part of his job? (if so, please add business number and address)
Are you a shade tree mechanic who has a 928?
Can you recommend a 928 mechanic in the area? (if so, please add business number and address)
What facilities are available to you/in the area?
Got a flatbed or can you recommend one?
Can you recommend a hotel in the area?
Do you have tools/garage/manuals?
Liftbars and jackstands?
Spare LH/MAF/Other parts
What year 928 do you have?
**************************
I'm still not sure which way to go with this and I will give every single person on the list a chance to opt-out of any online access to their data. For now my goal is to gather the names and contact info of anyone willing to help a fellow 928er in need in their area if possible. It will be a basic list that will be available for download either from some free download site or 928OC or somewhere else but until further notice it will not be generally published on the web.
The difference here is that if your e-mail is in an .xls or pdf that is downloadable it isnt' (easily) searchable, whereas if it's on an unsecured website it would be.
Bottom line: If you don't want your contact info to get out please don't send it to me, but if you want to be part of this I'll do what I can to have it stay in the hands of the 928 community that would need it.

I've shared info formatted in Excel sheets, shared as "Password Secured" PDF files with "no text extraction allowed", that were posted on a public website just for download not display, and found them cracked, searched and indexed on Google within a day. Do not mislead yourself thinking that what you put up won't get the same treatment. The info is not secure. I'm all for e-mailing a list as was done previously. If you plan on posting it someplace, I can't participate.

I gotta say I'm with drbob on this. I was recently a victim of identity theft that cost me over $6k - so I'm a bit gun-shy about sharing my info publicly. I'm happy to be on an emailed list as I was previously, but not a publicly hosted site.
