Replacement compressors - Sanden, Griffiths/Kuehl, Others?
Hi folks,
I had asked this below, but kind of buried in a somewhat different topic thread: anyone have experience with conversion kit replacement compressors?
The two main ones I found were a Griffiths kit that uses a Kuehl swash plate compressor, and a Vertex kit that uses a Sanden rotary compressor. Both come with new barrier lines.
I mainly think I need a new clutch, but the only source I'm finding for a clutch is much more expensive than either a new OEM compressor or one of these replacements.
Thanks,
Paul

The Kuehl compressor is the same as the Sanden. In addition, the stock compressor in your car is also a swash plate design. I think Porsche rebuilt compressors come with a clutch but someone else will have to verify that.

I would think someone would have a used clutch they would be willing to part with. I have the compressor on my car and a spare I plan to rebuild and put on, both have the clutch installed, but until I get around to actually woring on the AC I don't know for sure that they are both good. It will probably be another month before I get a chance to touch the AC, but if you are still in need of one when I get to it, and both mine are usable I'd be happy to help you out with my spare.

Porsche rebuilts do/did (not currently available) come with clutches, but new OE compressors are actually cheaper.

I will also soon need a very high efficiency compressor for a non-r-12 system. Small, efficient, and hopefully is lighter than stock

We sell brand new Denso compressors for the 80 to 89 cars for $395. No core needed.

Sorry to add confusion, but I just called Vertex and they're telling me that the compressor included in their kit is a Sanden 507 or 508. While Sanden makes scroll compressors, as far as I can tell, the 507 and 508 are not scrolls, they're 10 cylinder swash plates.
The search goes on...
BTW, my appologies to JHowell, it looks like you were exactly correct about the Sanden in the Vertex kit being the same as the Kuehl.

Why not just update the car with a 10PA20C? It is used on many many cars from early 90's to even early 2000 models. You will need the bracket from a later 928 that adapts the ear mount on the car to a body mount on the compressor. You may or may not be able to connect the existing blocks to the new compressor. If not, you will probably have to crimp up your own low and high side compressor hoses.
Or you can just get a rebuilt 6E171...

Well, since the SD507 is, according to Sanden, an R12 compressor, I decided to just go with a new NipponDenso from 928sRus. My system is converted to 134a. I suppose it might be possible to install a late-model GTS 134a compressor, but then things get more complicated with a number of not-inexpensive brackets, plus new hoses, etc.
Cheers,
Paul
