Default Leaking steering rack

Need some help here...

I replaced the upper steering bearing along with the sleeve. To do so, I removed the universal joint at the bottom of the shaft as per the service manual procedure. During the removal, the rack protection cap (928 347 923 00) broke in pieces (the plastic was brittle).

Since this repair, the rack leaks (a few drops after each drive).

Will a new protection cap solve the problem? Does it snap tight or is it just for dirt protection?

Thanks.

You need it, the tolerances of the racks are such that I refuse to rebuild them here. I'll gladly pay someone else to do it, so they can deal with the warantee costs.

I put some transmission sealer in the reservoir and no more leak! I think it was called trans-x or something. I bought it at WalMart. I didn’t put the whole bottle in … only a 1/4th I think. Good luck! / Bruce

I rebuild the racks myself.
However that plastic cap you speak of is only for dust protection.
It has NOTHING to do with sealing the rack.

Does the fluid drip below the input shat or from the bellows? Did you loosen the banjo bolts? I suggest getting new sealing rings and putting those in. Those bolts can be tightened a bit, but if you snap one or strip the rack holes you'll be sorry.

I chased a leaking input shaft for a year on mine it ended up that the new seal I installed was leaking around the outside diameter not the shaft I ended up having to silicone seal the outside of the seal iniside the housing and let it cure overnight problem solved I hope this helps
