AC clutch explode??? or do i have bigger issues
 

driving down the road and my AC stopped being cold, got home, popped the hood to see if it was getting power and saw this.... (see picture) is that a simple AC clutch job, or more to it?

Yup, all you need to do is replace the A/C clutch. I had this happen in my wife's former 968. The inner plate is attached to the pulley via a rubber substrate. This substrate deteriorates over time until it finally gives up and separates. You do not need to evacuate the refrigerant for clutch replacement. Pay attention to the shims when you install the new one.

They will also do that when they come apart inside sometimes, make sure the compressor still turns normally.

Before you buy a clutch check to see that the compressor is not froze.

It looks like my tying is soo slow Greg beat me to the info.

Usually when the compressor seizes up it will just toss the belt. But it is a good idea to check by hand to see whether the inside portion of the pulley can turn.

so i can spin that inside "cup" and the clutch plate jobby in front of the belt. is that how you see if the compressor is stuck?, or is there a better way?

I had a 928 compressor that seemed OK but kept burning out clutches. Replacing the clutch is a bit of a challenge as they are hard to find used and remanufactured ones from Denso, at least for the 6E171, are $120. After burning up the second one, I bought a remanufactured compressor with clutch.

Well, since you can turn the center portion, I would go ahead and try the clutch replacement. Like I said, I did this on a 968 and the A/C was fine for years after that. There is always a possibility that there is a problem with the compressor that will cause the clutch to fail again, but IMO it is much less likely than the rubber just disintegrating by itself over time.

so i took the belt off, and the center section spins, but the belt portion does not want to move much, if at all, im guessing the melted mess hardened when i shut her down lastnight.

Just to be clear, I'm not disagreeing with Dan at all - all you may need is a new clutch; the compressor may be fine. I'm more making the point that there aren't many good options for replacing the clutch. I found Denso via Amazon as the only real option, although you might find a used compressor from which you can salvage the clutch. You may need a clutch removal tool as well. Some come off easily and others require the tool. I think this one worked on my 6E171.
