Default Can I hook up the power with engine out?

I have a 82 Euro S with the engine out and was wondering if I could hook up the power to test some of the electrics(lights, windows, locks(vacuum?),etc. Can I connect this wire(the big red one) to the hot post to do this or is there more to it? I think these are the wires for the starter- where exactly does the damaged uninsulated wire go? I will shrink wrap the damaged insulation on the big red wire.

As it sits now with the battery hooked up I have 12.7v at the battery and the big red wire in the pic but no power at the hot post.

Thats quite a mess... I'd tidy that up - you'll need to repair it before the engine goes back in.

To power the car you need the main starter connection B+ (really big black wire) connected to the jump post red wire (leave the yellow wire for the starter (if there) disconnected.

Thats all you need... but be careful with those connections - there are no fuses anywhere in those lines - if you short it out you will be doing arc welding...

Thanks Alan, I jumped the big black one to the jump post and got power for the first time. Very exciting pushing all the buttons to see what I had.
-Head lights rolled great but right one's burnt out. Can't get fog or taillights to work(except tail blinkers work-forgot to check break lights)
-hvac blower works at all speeds and hvac controls light up
-windows work but passenger won't go back up-looks like the arm that moves in the channel is out and missing white wheel
-all dash lights work(in German) except instrument lighting
-all wipers work except front wipers won't shut off unless I push the stalk in
-mirrors don't work(rt one makes a little noise when I toggle down on lt and rt setting)
-horn doesn't work
-no illuminated symbol on headlight ****
-can't find lock button or hatch release button
-interior lights and dash box lights work
-sunroof tries to move(I didn't try too long)
-clock and cig lighter aren't hooked up yet
-cruise relay makes a noise when cruise activated-good sign?

Turned out better than I expected.

I think the hatch release feature was introduced in 84.

"-no illuminated symbol on headlight ****", I think this only lights when the key is on, not just the lights.

Correct - comes on with ignition. if it still doesn't come on its probably just a bulb - its the one that is on the most.

Pull the pod switch ***** straight out from the pod face - they come right off... you can then see the bulb. Slip a little clear vinyl tubing over the bulb to pull it out - replacements (1.2W) avail at most automotive stores.
