What bothers me most, is that he did, in fact, pick it up for $2000 last week on ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWAX%3AIT

Most interesting is the statements by the previous owner in the ad:
"Sticking clutch possibly due to excessive crankshaft endplay."
And in the posted question/answer section:
Q: Hi, The double disk clutch in the older 928's is always in need of adjustment, could that be your sticking clutch problem or have you had it looked at? This car is the color and year I have been looking for forever. I work in the city and live on LI it would be an easy deal CJ Jun-17-10
A: That's what I thought at first. I replaced the clutch master and slave cylinders, then found that the crank is moving too much. My plan was to repair the engine, or upgrade to a newer, more powerful one. There are parts available, but I need to move on. Thanks for interest.

Whoa, original ad says possible excessive crank end play, doesn't disclose that on this ad. What a scammer! Should post a question pubically on his auction and attach the link!

I asked him about the crank end play. Let's see what the response is. I'll post it, if there is one.

So here's the response I got:

1) Dear jeffthenose,

We had the engine measured at the dealer and there is NO crankshaft issues...previus owner was wrong..

- shipit!store

2) Dear jeffthenose,

one tiny dent, little rust under gas door...thats it. sorry you will have to get your fee 928 somewhere else
...its in excellent condition, only 50,000 miles and is mint for a 1979. if you know this type of car you should also know all years after 1979 ALL have huge issues with every new tecnology the implimented in every new year. I would never even own one newer than 1979 if I got it for free...they will all nickel dime you to death. 1978 was the first year and had problems too. 1979 is the absolute best year to have when it comes to 928's.

sorry we are going to restore it completely, it's not for sale. taking listing down.....

- shipit!store

3) Dear jeffthenose,

2nd owner didnt know what the hell he was doing or saying...thats why we bought it...his loss our gain..

- shipit!store

4) Dear jeffthenose,

you have been added to our block buyers list....we do not deal with e-bayers like yourself, sorry

- shipit!store

and my final email to the guy since he emailed me directly:

Dear shipit!store,

Wow, because I ask for some disclosure about the car you block me as a buyer,
now there is a sign of a guy who is confident about his product. Good luck
selling the car.

When you decide to part it out, I'll give you $500 for it. Could always use some
extra quarter windows for my 90 S4. You really don't know what you are getting
into with a restoration of this car do you? Stick $15,000 into this car and you'll
have a nice $5000 car

By the way, you paid $2030 for it in New York on 6/23 or so. This car is known
to the 928 community now by VIN. The paint on the hood doesn't match the
fenders. The seats have cheap vinyl. The dash is cracked and all the rubber on
the engine will need to be replaced due to age. How are the aluminum ball joints?

The 79 is the best year? You have never driven a modern 928 have you? The
problems you talk about come from owner neglect, not design problems.

Was a time when I might have enjoyed educating this guy, but now I see it as sad, as this is exactly the scenario of a 928 going from neglected, but savable, to parked in a field and forgotten.

It's back, now at the bargain price of $13,500. Up from the $5k he was asking before, a week after he bought it off eBay for $2k.

Have at 'im.

I love the color combination and he is 100% right -- '79 IS the best year! (I am jaded of course. See sig.)

Do you think he just got in and drove it after 20 years sitting. Yikes. Talk about cruelty to sharks.

Those are vinyl seat covers done by someone who shouldn't have.

Looks like the rear quarter damage is new? It's not on the previous Ebay auction.

Seems a rather short list for records back to original owner. My file is over an inch thick back to the window sticker.

Is there a center chanel to that home theater set up in the back? WTF?

That paint is really, really shagged especially on the hood and left front fender. The write up in the ad should be nominated for a creative writing award of some sort as well....

Why would you pressure test but not fill the AC system?

Unless...it does not hold pressure....
