Well the garage issue is not a factor for me as she sits in the driveway. Bride's car has priority! Guess I am torn. Many have had success repairing (lasted years) and many have had spontaneous leaks from what was up to then a good tank that is now nearing 30 years old. Seems a risk for any old body owner to garage their 928 regardless of history.

I test flew helicopters in the Army (27 years) and struggled to find copilots to go with me because they claimed they did not do test flights because of the danger of what might go wrong.

My reply was and still is now "you go on a test flight every time you fly, the difference is I know what is wrong and you are just waiting for the unknown to fail"!

When I spun my insert, I sealed it up with PC11, and in 3 years it never leaked a drop. Some of this time it was subjected to 120F temps. If you have a stuffed filter or pump in there, this is not a very good option.
When I finally replaced the tank I got the insert out, but gave the tank away to guy with a split one. Since he had nothing to lose, he repaired it. Thoroughly cleaned and dried interior. Roughened up the insert area. Ran a stiff wire (coathanger) through the top hole and out through the bottom with the insert hooked on the end- applied gas proof epoxy, pulled the insert into place and allowed it to set. It stayed dry for at least several months after, when I last saw him.
If it was me I would try to get another tank as first option - with the insert OK, filter or pump removed (as mine was). If you opt to repair your tank, I would do as above out of the car, and test it using something similar to gas but less flammable (Kerosene/paraffin), and let it sit for a week, as full as you can manage, before refitting it to the car.

Why can't you a bulkhead pipe fitting with the proper threads like the plastic insert?

I dont think there is the space for such a fitting, and such fittings with the correct thread inside there will not be on shelves for the picking - IIRC its M37x1.5 ?
